Hello everyone! I'm Michele, and I'm 22 years old, 275 pounds, 5'8". I'm just finishing up college. Wow, talk about some new changes. Along with a change in pace, being that I will no longer be in school, I have decided to go through with surgery. I am still waiting for my psych visit before we can send the first letter. My insurance doesn't run long after I graduate, so I'm trying to speed up the process. I saw the show on Oprah about the surgery, kind of scared me, but I'm ready for a life change. I want to be healthy. My grandmother just went in for surgery for breast cancer, she also has bad diabetes and hypertension. I just feel if I don't lose weight, I will see the same thing happen to me. I've always been very active and healthy, but I can't seem to control what I eat. I play rugby and workout 4 times a week with my mom. We have lots of fun together. She is my total support for this surgery. So now..I wait, and I wait....until something can happen. It's nice reading all of your messages, lets me know that there are others going through the same thing. Hugs, Michele

Michele, Welcome. First off don't let Oprah scare you. She has never been a supporter of this surgery. Secondly, we have quite a few things in common. I am 5'8" and started out at 273# the day of surgery. I am almost 11 months out and now weigh in at 159#. I too was active in athletics pre-op, but it just didn't seem to help. I made a committment to myself that if I had surgery I would really focus on exercising, which I have done, and it has paid off. I now feel as though I have hte body to match the active lifestyle I have always led. My mom was my biggest supporter too. I don't know what I would have done without her. The biggest difference between us is age (I'm 37). Being young you have a lot of advantages going for you. If you have any questions e-mail me. Janine 5/16/03 273//159/??? BTC - Belividere, IL
