I am 10 & 1/2 weeks out and was doing pretty well until this last week if I eat anything solid (meat of any kind) I am throwing up almost immediately. Could this be a block. I do fine with fluids, crackers, nuts, and protein bars, but when I try anything else I am in the bathroom. Is this a blockage or what!!!!??????????? Any suggestions. I am so fed up with shakes. As my surgeon is exactly that he does not do much of any follow up for this so is family doc my only option????? Any suggestions would be great. Also (sorry if gross you all out) going to the bathroom is like giving birth, not constipated but seems like my bowel tract is stalled or something. Thanks again for your help.

Leslea, I don't know much about blockages, maybe someone else will have experience for you. The bowel movements would concern me also. I suggest calling your surgeon as soon as you can. Insist on a follow up appointment! Keep us posted. Good luck and God bless, Andrea

Leslea, It could be a block. To find out you may need to have a scope. At about 6 weeks I started throwing up so my surgeon scheduled me for a scope. I was 100% blocked and spent the next 3 days in the hospital. They had to hook up my old stomach with a feeding tube and I had to take everything thru the tube. This lasted for a month. Tube is out and I am back to soft foods. This happens to about 6% of WLS patients so see if your surgeon will consider having you do a scope. The scope is no big deal but knowing what's wrong is a big deal. You need to know if your new opening is at least 10mm so that food can pass out of your pouch. This may not be what you are experiencing but in my case having a scope got me back on track. Bob

It could be something as simple as a stricture that can be stretched out with an endescope. I had a friend that had that done. It was a simple outpatient procedure...they go down with a scope and stretch the stoma (where the intestines attach to the stomach) to make it larger. The scar tissue tightens down sometimes to restrict how large the hole of the stoma is. Hope this helps. ~Dawn Phillips

Leslea - My experiences with blockages (I've had 3) is that you can't keep anything down. You would be vomiting alot. I was able to keep some liquids down but not any food. If you are getting nuts and protein bars down, I wouldn't think it was a blockage. Maybe your pouch is irritated. Try eating soft foods again for a few days and then try adding solids back in. My BM's are like that sometimes too, I use Milk of Magnesia. It works wonders. I would call your doctor if all of that doesn't work. Good Luck!!
