Nauseated and having trouble getting protein in
I have been on phase 2 of pureed diet for a little over a week now and everything that I eat makes me nauseated. The protein drinks are so gross and make me nauseated. I have tried the recipe forum and the mixture of ingredients made me so nauseated. I do not want to purchase protein powder over the internent and was wandering does anyone have any ideas of where to purchase protein powder in the Waterloo area that is descent? I am looking for something with high protein per scoop. The stuff I have now I purchased at the pharmacy and is only 7gm of protein per scoop. I am eating baby food and cottage cheese and skim milk crystal light I am getting adequate fluid intake but as for the food yuck!!! never thought those words would come out of my mouth!!!! i ordered the ultimate chopper to puree my own meats to try to get more protein in hasn't came yet so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Hi Kimberly, I am not in the waterloo area, but I know Walmart has some in the pharmacy section. Just be sure to check the carbs and sugar on things. Also, walgreens and GNC. Don't know if you have Hy-Vee and Drugtown over there, but they carry protein also. I wish you luck. I cannot stand the drinks. I use the Carb Solution Taste Sensation Bars (from Walmart) And I do use the AnyWhey Tasteless protein in stuff I mix, Like pudding, gravy (I use the dry envelopes you mix with water) and I have tried putting it in Bread and things that I bake. Do you know about adding dry, powdered milk to regular milk to double the protein? I think it is 1/3 C. dry to each cup of reg. milk. (Skim, 1%, etc.) There is a Yahoo group for people in the eastern IA area, If you would like a link, just e-mail me or let me know somehow. They are mostly Dr. Glas**** from Cedar Falls, but anywone is welcome and they are a great group!

Kimberly,
Hi- sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble, hon. It is a never-ending process to get protein in and the protein drinks certainly help a lot. I tried a kind from Hy-Vee that was absolutely gross! Haven't tried any of the others from Wal-Mart or GNC. I know that a friend of mine (*****ads, but does not post often - LISA GOMEZ) is able to drink the Atkins protein shakes from Wal-Mart. She has had problems with other protein powders and has tried a bunch. As for foods, have you tried refried beans with melted cheese? They are good on a reduced fat cracker (when you can have crackers).
Personally, I have used the UNJURY protein powder(ordered off line at www.unjury.com) and the ELITE chocolate and chocolate mint (also ordered from the internet at Susan Maria's site www.bariatriceating.com. She is a member of this site and posts to the main board often.) I liked the UNJURY and the Elite, but I get twice the amount of servings in the Elite than in the UNJURY for the same price....and, the Elite chocolate mint tastes like a girl scout thin mint cookie. Yummy
As for being nauseated whenever you eat anything, I can relate. That happened to me early on also. At your stage of the journey, I would focus on fluids and protein supplements. Always try to drink and eat what your surgeon recommends, but if you cannot, be assured that it has happened to the best of us. You have been newly "rerouted". Give your body some adjustment time. And, always, always, always, if things don't feel right, don't just rely on our advice, but call your surgeon or center. (Mine was used to hearing from me every other day!)
Hope this has been of some help to you. Hang in there!
God bless,
Andrea
Hi Kimberly,
I'm sorry to hear that you are so nauseous. In the beginning I ate a lot of soup- have you tried that? Also I bought chocolate Isopure from GNC- it has 50 grams of protein per serving (2 scoops), which is really high. I blended it well with a cup or so of water, and then blended in some ice cubes to make a shake. It wasn't too bad. Now I drink the Atkins pre-mixed chocolate shakes. An 11oz can has 20 grams of protein. If I'm ever feeling a bit upset in the stomach, I drink hot fluids- this helps me a lot. Hope you're feeling better soon. Hang in there!

I also had a problem with being nauseated with everything. It will pass, it's the delayed effects of the anesthetic. Someone told me to double milk it also. I took carnation (sugar free) instant breakfast and added 1/2 cup of powdered milk with it to double my protein/milk. I also would eat a few slices of Kraft fat free cheese for breakfast. 5 grams of protein per slice and not much flavor, so possibly it wont make you nauseated? I just wasn't hungry for anything so i would take the cheese slices to work and eat them while sitting at my desk. i could nibble at them and still get my protein in. Hope this helps. ~Dawn
