Any info on the Depo shot
I have been on the shot over 4 years now and am 10 months out.
I had heard about it slowing weight loss or making you gain weight. the main reason is that the shot *convinces* your body that you are pregnant or in menopause, so it wont release an egg. so in a way your body kinda goes thru that, as far as wanting to store up some energy etc. that is what i understand from my nursing classes and asking lots of questions anyhow.
if I am wrong, anybody feel free to correct me! but this is what I have understood!

Hi DeAnne!
I have no experience with Depo post-op, only pre-op. I gained 60 pounds while on Depo and that was with an OVER-active thyroid gland. I also became pregnant on it with an ectopic pregnancy and lost my left fallopian tube, ovary and 50% chance of ever having another child and almost died when my fallopian tube ruptured. You need to do your own independent research, but I would highly recommend NOT using Depo. From the research that I have done and speaking with my PCP and endocrinologist, BC pills are not very effective after RNY, due to the malabsorption factor. The BC patch is only deemed effective for those under 198# (says so right on the package). An IUD is not an option for me because I want to try to have another child at 18 months post-op. The Nuva Ring seems to be the best option for ME. But like I said, do your own research and speak with your OB/GYN (make sure he/she knows all about the surgery before taking his/her suggestions) and make your own educated decision.
Best of luck, Sweetie!

I used to be a drug rep for Depo. The scientific data on the product shows an average weight gain of 5 lbs in the first year. There are pros and cons to the product; I would be concerned about the Bone Mineral Density data and the risk of osteoporosis with long term Depo use. Short term use would probably not be detrimental in this regard. As it is an injection, you avoid the absorption issues. The scientific data shows that the incidence of pregnancy with Depo is LESS than tubal ligation. I would not recomend it one way or the other, just trying to provide info. Brenda
