HEART BURN
Just wondered if anyone else has trouble with heart burn. I have GERD and I thought that with this surgery it would decrease somewhat being stomach smaller and all, but lately heart burn is really bad. Haven't tried tums or anything yet checking with doc to see if this would be okay. ANy ideas. Thanks
Leslea,
I had GERD prior to WLS as well, also had IBS and have really had no problems with it since my surgery, other then if I eat something that is spicey that I shouldnt be eating anyhow.
Perhaps you could go back to taking nexium or prilosec or something like that? otherwise, you might want to contact your surgeon and let them know you are having these troubles, there might be something else going on!

Leslea, I have not had my initial consult with my surgeon yet, but I know from the support group that I go to the ladies that have had either open or lap have been put on pepcid and have been told they will be on it the rest of their lives. Not having had a consult yet with the surgeon I don't know his reasoning behind this, but heart burn is nothing to mess around with - don't want to scare you. My fiance had had trouble with heart burn for 10 years and dr kept giving him pills and didn't do a upper GI scope and it turned out that my fiance was one step away from esophagus cancer - don't mess around with heart burn or gerd! My man is fine now but we went through hell. Now I'm not saying this to scare you or anyone else just want to educate - not that I'm a professional. I hope things go well and if anyone knows the reasoning for a surgeon to put us on a heartburn med after gastric bypass please let us know! Take care Leslea and keep us updated! - Carol Nihsen
Hi Leslea,
See your doc right away & don't mess around. I thought I had heartburn & turned out to be heart problems which led to mild heart attack. I had never had heartburn before & due to stress passed it off as that. Women have such different symptoms than men & most of us think along the lines of "Hollywood Heart attacks" which you grab your chest. Not so. Do yourself a favor get checked out, of course I don't mean to scare you, but better be safe than sorry. Carolyn
How about a 2 for one deal? Try the TUMS. it might help with the heart burn, plus you get come calcium. (I know, not citrate, but any is still better than none. And if that is not the reason you are taking it, it is just a bonus right?) I like the tropical fruit flavors. might be enough to tide you over until you......check with your DR. Elizabeth
