Monday's Oprah
Did anyone watch and/or tape Oprah's show today? (Monday, Jan 12th) What did you think? I thought it was a pretty good show. You can just tell she isn't in favor of this whole surgery thing is she? I thought she was really digging around to find out what you can and can't eat to make you sick, etc. What did you think?

I watched it AND taped it for my husband to watch later. Oprah has always been very anti-weight loss surgery and usually is fairly direct in her disapproval of it. BUT I did notice that during this show she was at least trying to remain neutral. She at least seemed more interested in gathering and reporting some of the facts about the surgery. I was glad that the woman doctor spoke up on the issue of people regarding this surgery as a controversial issue. You could tell though that Oprah did not agree with the doctor AT ALL. I for one would like to see someone tell Oprah "Look it's great that you were able to loose your excess weight through diet and exercise BUT you must realize that some people cannot do that." I also would like to see someone point out to her the statistics on the percentage of obese people who actually are able to loose over 100 lbs and keep it off through diet and exercise only. From what my surgeon told me that percentage of people is very low.
Overall I thought the show was good, I just wish though that she would educate herself better on the subject. It is easy enough to find out what a person who has this surgery can and can't eat as well as the amount of food. Why is she still so shocked when someone says "I can only eat 1/4 or 1/2 a cup of chicken."?
I only got in on the end of the program due to work. I would really liked to have seen it all.
It still amazes me that someone who -so publicly- was heavy, thin, heavy, thinner, and now about right, is still so judgemental on other heavy people because they're doing something about their weight. Some of us just can't afford that chef, personal trainer and assistants to get it all done during the day the way someone with her kind of money and connections can.
At least she's trying to be more open minded, in the past she's been downright snide about it.

I thought all in all it was a pretty good show. But you could tell Oprah was restraining herself and not really voicing what she felt. But if we could all afford our own trainer and cook, then we probably could lose weight like she does. We all also know that eventually Oprah will probably put the weight back on (she usually does), so it will be interesting to see if she considers the surgery. She is definitely one that yo-yos.
