Pregnancy after WLS
Can anyone tell me what your surgeons have told you about getting pregnant after WLS - My surgeon told me to wait 12 months - Is this what all of you have heard?? Does anyone know of anyone who has gotten pregnant sooner than 12 months? Not that I would, but just wondering if this has happened!! Thanks Sunny.....pre-op.
There are some ppl who do get preg after surgery, there is a great yahoo group about it, OSSG-pregnant, something to that effect. On there some women would kinda brag about getting preg so soon after surgery.
My regular doc flat out told me (and this didnt make me very happy, but anyways) she told me that if I got preg in the first 12 months, I would either be put on total bedrest in the hospital with IV's, or I would have to abort. um, WHAT? ?????
So... Needless to say, I am staying on the shot for sure until the 12 months is up (had surgery in May, so I am in the downward hill) but I didnt like her telling me that either, but I know that they are so worried about the baby getting enough nutrition. I think the main thing is once you have stopped losing, then you can get preg. when you are maintaining your weight, it is healther then, when you can handle your protein better, etc.
Plus, from what i have heard, they kinda want you to take your regular vitamins, PLUS a prenatal vitamin. no biggie, just extra V's for the bod.
thats all I know for now, but maybe later this year, I will know first hand? lol I wish,

One gal in our local support group had her surgery in Rochester & the doctor neglected to tell her not to get pregnant. Only a few months after her surgery she got pregnant with twins! It was not an easy pregnancy as she couldn't eat enough to feed both babies & herself. The were born early but are fine now, luckily. She was lucky. I have heard of big problems with even single births.

Sunny,
With everything that I have read and what the Genesis Center for Bariatric surgery recommends is that you do not get pregnant for 18 months to 2 years. Believe me, I am 36 and want another, but decided to get my health in order first. I'm going to be an old mom, but that's okay. I think that the concern is about you being able to remain healthy while your body gives all of its good stuff to baby.
Actually, deciding about having another baby also was the final decision I had to make with my hubby before pursuing surgery further. As I said, we decided to get momma healthy for our three children and ourselves before trying for another little blessing.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
God bless,
Andrea
