I'm six weeks post op and I'm having a hard time getting all my protein in. I was wondering??? What shakes have you tried that actually taste good? I'm diabetic so I can't use a shake with juice. I don't have any problem with milk so if you have suggestions let me know. I really apprecite your help. Patti.
Patti,
I have tried samples of about 10 different ones (most of them were yucky) but I found one I really liked called Pro Score 100 by champion nutrition. I like the chocolate but the vanilla is good too. It is really smooth and not chalky. It is also fairly sweet but not overly so. I ordered a sample from vitalady.com to be sure I liked it. Then I ordered a 2# can of it. The can is around $22.50 but that is cheap for a protein mix. It gives you alot more protein per serving (I use a scoop and a half with 6 ounces of water which is 24grams) than some of the grocery store bought stuff. If you mix it with milk that will add even more protein. It honestly tastes just like chocolate milk! Hope this info helps you.
Patti Jo I am so glad to see you posting. I have been worried about you. I know what you mean about the protein. I just finally got up to snuff on my fluid intake and the vitamins. Now to conquer the protein. I have come up with an few things that have worked for me. One is Hormel chicken in the can. Of course right now I can't find the can to tell you all the details, but I mix the all white meat with a little Mayo (which has protein too), mustard, and a Tiny bit of sweet relish and eat it on a few crackers. Also, I ordered the unflavored Whey protein from Susan Maria's site ( www.bariatriceating.com ) and am able to mix it in with things like Sf pudding. It can be cooked too so I am going to try putting ti in a pumkin recipe I found on the cooking and baking site. Also, the thin sliced meats (like Carl Buddig) have quite a bit of protein in them and I take them to Mom's for lunch when I know I am going to be there. I get mine at Aldi's for about 39 cents a package. Cheapest lunch I have had in years! Kind of salty though. Work good rolled up with cheese and also melted. I will let ya know how the baking turns out. Keep us posted so I don't have to worry so much ok??? lol (((HUGS))) Elizabeth
Ann, I haven't had a problem with that yet, but you do have to mix it well. The pudding gets REALLY thick. I have made pudding with the double milk too ( 1 c. skim milk and 1/3 c. dry milk powder---16 G. protein per cup) and it gets really thick too. I will let ya know about anyother things I get made. Elizabeth
Patti Jo: I am still pre-op, so I don't know much- however, I do know that I have been dreading those thick shakes. I have problems with "textures" and I know that the shakes would be a struggle for me. The nutritionist at Mercy told me about "Proteinex" (spelling might be incorrect)- this is a liquid that you stir into your water or yogurt- you just use a few teaspoons for a serving. She said it tastes a little bit like a sweet tart. They have it at Mercy Franklin and Mercy West pharmacies. Hope this helps!
Alrighty - here's what I found out.
The only pharmacy number I could find was for outpatient, 515-643-4429. They were very helpful. She said it is very very popular, but they haven't been able to get it in stock for several weeks, and it looks like it will be at least 2 more weeks before they can get it. It is spelled Proteinex, and it runs approx $13 for 8 ounces. Ouch. But if it seriously only takes 2 tsp and is palatable, it will be worth it. Thanks for telling us about it!!
