I have a C-Pap but my doctor discussed surgery. He told me that the success rate for surgical treatment is very low & often insurance companies will not cover it because of this. Dixie

One method removes the uvula, that knob-shaped thing in the back of your throat. My doctor said if I still have apnea after losing 100#+ they would consider removing my tonsils and adenoids(which should have been done in my youth- I'm over 40 now!) Another method I checked into involved essentially shaving off part of your upper palate. They wouldn't do it for me- can't remember why. A friend of ours had horrible problem with apnea. First they tried cpap then bipap. Then he ended up having to have a tracheotomy in order to breathe. He was very heavy, at least 450#. We have not kept in touch but I hear he has lost almost all his weight, most likely from WLS. I would assume his breathing problems have improved too. All the doctors I have ever talked to said my apnea would probably improve if I lost weight. However, there are people who are not overweight who also have apnea. Its just the way your throat is structured. No easy answers. Only a qualified ears/nose/throat specialist could answer your question what is right for you.

ok, I am kinda the *not your average girl* on this subject. So, when I was about 11, i had my tonsils out. at the time, it was an old surgeon, and I guess my uvula got in the way, so they cut it off at that time. woops, lol. anyhow, I still had some sleep apnea, (at 360lbs) was tested for it etc. I never snored, but I moaned instead. hard to breathe at that size, I am sure a lot of you understand. Now, as of today, down 111#, heheh. to 249, and as far as I can tell, no more sleep apnea. none. Not much for baddreams, or waking up in the night or any of that anymore. However, I have so much damn energy, some nights i can hardly get to sleep, cuz parts of me are tired, but the rest of me isnt! lol anyhow, just my .02, for what its worth! judi

the surgeon asked me if I had apnea, and I said, "how the H*** wuld I know. I have two dogs that sleep with me, I have to get up to go pee several times a night, I have insomnia, so I could be up for a couple of hours anytime from 1:00 on" He didn't recommend that I be tested, good thing, I am getting crabbier as I am aging waiting for my surgery. LOL
