I don't know anything about surgery because I am pre-op, but I can understand if you are nervous. I'll say a prayer for you. All will go well and hopefully there will be no throwing up at all! Andrea

Hi Melissa, I am also pre-op so can't speak with personal knowledge but my doctor takes you off solids several days (14) before surgery. You don't have to go to that extreme but I understand that if you go on clear liquids for a few days you are very less likely to vomit. But be sure to drink plenty of liquids so that they have no trouble with your veins. I had another surgery just last month & vomited right after waking. It wasn't much as there wasn't much in my stomach at that time & I don't remember any pain involved with vomiting. Also if you are nauseas they can give you something in your IV to counteract it. Good luck. Dixie

I am 6 weeks post-op and I have yet to throw up. I think it's the anesthesia that makes you vomit...if you think you will, then tell the anesthesiologist before and ask if they can give you something like Dixie said. Remember that your mind controls a lot of your recovery so stay positive and only think about the good things Deb Paul

I went through the throwing-up phase and occasionally still get a bit nauseous. Throwing up in our new phase is like a new baby spitting up. What you have coming up is mostly froth. There is no stomach acid or that nasty throat feeling/taste. The heaving can be a bit intense. My good nurses always gave me injections for the nausea until I could tolerate Phernergan by mouth. I am still using liquid Phenergan daily when I get queasy and on the verge. Do't be afraid-- you may not be one to throw up. If you do, just make sure you have an emesis basin handy and breathe through the episode. That was hardest.

Susan, glad to see you are up and writing. when I had my hysterectomy, I didn't get sic****il about day three, I suppose that was when they stopped giving me the meds in my IV. so they had to start all over for a couple of days.

Melissa, I understand what you're feeling...I'm scheduled for Tuesday! I have always had trouble with anesthesia, but when I had my gallbladder out two years ago, I told the anesthesiologist that I get sick, and he laughed and said he had a "special ****tail." It was the first time I had surgery that I didn't get sick! Be sure and let them know you're concerned before you get started. Just remember that you'll soon be on the way to the losing side!

This is different for everyone. But I have found that most people don't get sick right after surgery. They will have you on a diet that will be easy on your new pouch. I sure understnd about being scared. The night before my surgery was the worst for me. Just think about all the reasons you decided to do this. Good luck Lisa J

Melissa, With my original surgery 7 years ago (a VBG) I did heave after they took out my gastric tube. With my RNY revision 15 weeks ago, they didn't give me a gastric tube... and i didn't have problem at all... i guess it all varies on the person and the surgery. I got nauseated after day 4, and the physician gave me some meds for that. Hope this helps..and GOOD LUCK GIRL! ~~Dawn Phillips
