Help! I am 11 days from surgery and so far I was just excited but today a large dumptruck of butterflies showed up in my tummy. I am sooo nervous especially with everything happening in Des Moines. I am having surgery in Grinnell and I feel good about my surgeon but I have this sickening feeling in the pit of my stomache. Did anybody else feel this way? Does it go away? I'm afraid to tell anybody I'm scared because I've been having to defend the decision to have surgery and if I say I'm scared they'll try to talk me out of it and I just can't take that right now.

Andrea- I have been very nervous lately too-(read my post from a few days ago). I am feeling much better now. The fact is that this is a low-risk surgery. Dr. Schwartz is my surgeon too, and he has a great reputation as I'm sure you know. It is easy to get caught up in all the negative media regarding WLS lately, but the risks remain the same. You need to make the decision for yourself, but if you were excited until today's butterflies, I would say it is normal to feel a little anxious the week before. Now you need to remind me of everything I'm saying to you when you get home from the hospital because my surgery is Nov. 19!! Best of luck to you! Lori PS: Are you going to the support group meeting in Grinnell this Saturday morning?

I think that if you were not a little nervous there would be something wrong !!!!!! I had my RNY last november by Dr. AC the doc who is the center of all the BS in Des Moines. He was great! I spent an hour on the phone with the DMS Register friday but they used 2-3 lines for what I told them!! It really showed me how biased they are and that they are only looking to sell papers not put the whole truth out there!! But anyway do not let the hype get to you if you did what the doc told you to and had all the tests that they wanted you will do just fine!I have been whineing alot lately so I wont say anymore !!If you want you can email me or anyone else on here we whould all be glad to answer your questions! Not that youll need it but good luck on your surgery !!!!! Bill

I understand what you're saying...I'm scheduled for 10/28, and I'm having a lot of the same feelings. I talked to my doctor's office this morning, and felt better afterward...his nurse is a sweetheart, and is really great about returning calls. I've been scared and excited, and nervous and frustrated...sound familiar? I just keep telling myself that I've waited a long time to do this, and have had to jump through so many hoops to get approved, that whatever happens is meant to happen. I wish you the best with your surgery.

Hi Andrea, Your feelings are right on targert. You'll do great. I was one of DR. AC last patients, my surgery was on 9/29, and I would do it all over again with Dr. A.C. Who-13 news contacted me today and they said they are just wanting to find out why this surgery has grown over 200%. I was pleasant but I said I think the numbers and feed back speak for itself. Insurance comp. are now starting to understand the necessiaty for this surgery and are finally granting more approvals. Surgeons doing this surgery are becoming more skilled and bariatri centers are able to do more. As far as the mess in Des Moines Dr. AC and Dr. Myrie have not been charged with any wrong doing. So Andrea, ignore the hysteria and hype and enjoy your journey. You deserve this. Best wishes. Patti

Andrea, At our support group meeting in Fort Dodge last night, we asked Dr. VerSteeg what he thought about all the media hype. He said that to his knowledge one of the patients that died was a heavy smoker (Dr. VerSteeg wont even DO surgery on you unless he is sure that you have quit smoking and commit to stay quit, because of the complications that can arise) Also he said that rumor has it they do alot of higher risk surgeries in DesMoines of patients that weigh 500+ and that they are alot higher risk. I wouldn't let the hype in Des Moines bother you. They have done 300 surgeries and have lost 6 patients which is about a 2% death rate. My surgeon has done 200 surgeries and lost 0 patients. So.. as you can see, it's just like the death rate for other things..they vary by hospital. I was very very nervous the whole MONTH before my surgery...im lucky my hubby didn't divorce me... (we are talking MAJOR ***** lol)...so you are doing pretty good if you are just starting at 11 days pre op! Take it easy....take this time to get all your "last" meals in... can we say "DAIRY QUEEN" daily? lol ~~~have one (or two or three) for me too ~Dawn Phillips - 3 months post op - down 62 lbs.

Here comes the Butterfly Fairy to gobble up all your butterflies!!! You shouldn't have to defend your decision to anyone other than to say "I have complete faith in my doctor." It is normal to be excited and anxious. This is a major lifestyle change, not just an operation! Spend lots of time reading about post-op care and diet. The more you know ahead of time the more it will relieve those butterflies afterward!
