I am having surgery Oct 27th. I have to drink protien shakes the first month. But will it hurt to drink V8 juice in between sometimes or is that too much acid? Also, is it true I will have to grind up my meds after surgery? And if I so is that for the rest of my life? Thanks, Melissa

All of the doctors have some differences, so see what your's says, but I take a pill vitamin and I'm 1 month post-op. I was on chewables for 3 weeks. A lot of people take chewables, adult or kids for a while, but your pouch and stoma will grow with time, and you can try a pill, even cutting it in half would help. I have heard that some calcium pills are very big and can get stuck. The calcium chews are a nice treat, or you can cut the pill in half with a knife. Centrum adult chewables are good, 100% folate and 50% of your calcium for the day (and all the other good stuff). The V8 juice....you can always try it, some doctors say no tomatoes for a while. But I just tried salsa this week, and it was great! I tried all kinds of protein shakes...there is a link... www.vitalady.com that sells samples. I just switched to protein bars, and I can eat them better than the shakes. Your doctor prob. has his own view on these issues. Deb Paul

I have tolerated V8 juice really well and feel it supplies needed vitamins. I try to drink a 6 oz can daily. I was surprised too that the acid didn't bother me but I can eat small amounts of salsa too which I LOVE! I was able to take my meds without being ground up the second day after surgery. I still take chewable vitamins just to finish off the bottle but am definitely switching to pills once they are gone. The chewables leave a nasty taste in my mouth!

Hi Melissa, I was taking the pain pills in the hospital, cut in half, after they took me off the morphine. I do not have any trouble taking pills. I was also eating real food at the hospital. My doctor and dietitian were not that keen on people living on protein shakes. My first meals were broth, jello, tea, ice chips, water. My first food was a very small egg omlet with cheese and I mean small and OJ. I have tried baby foood no go for me!! I blenderize soups and veggies. I eat fat-free cheese, cottage cheese, sugar free jello and pudding, egg salad made with fat-free mayo. Today I made a roast and I blenderized 1 oz of meat with broth and the cooked carrots, I will have 1/4c of this and 1/4c mashed potatoes for dinner. I eat applesauce and some of the baby food fruits, watch the sugar. I eat yogurt. I have not had any dumping, I measure everything. I have lost 22lbs since my Sept. 15th surgery date. I go back to work on Oct. 13th. My doctor I think is a little conservative about people going back to work too soon. Hope this helps. Take Care paula
