Someone told me that people that have this WLS surgeries have a bad odor due to the wasting products of weight loss. I have found nothing to support this. Has anyone found this true? Thanks.

Laurel- I have not yet had my WLS surgery- but I can tell you when i lost alot of weight on MEdifast and also on Atkins- my breath stunk to high heaven. It is caused by ketones- which happens when you lose weight quickly and your body is using fat reserves for fuel. I know that is not an exact scientific explanation- but look up "ketones" and you may get a better explanation!

now I always thought the bad breath and bad odor was from the chewable vitamins. ??? Just a thought! Judi

Makes sense to me. I will ask my Dr. or better yet the nurse coordinator. Not that it matters, but I work in a small area with a lot of cubicles and it does tend to make me wonder. I am just so anxious to get this done and start to live life more comfortably and healthy.

So true! I carry my toothbrush/toothpaste and gum around with me. I can just taste when my breath gets bad. And yes it is due to the presence of ketones. I liken it to "old fat" being burned up which of course is going to stink! I read that this goes away after the first year when you are eating more carbs. My sweat also seems to be stronger so I have to freshen up more between showers than I used to.

And just what we all want to hear is...... if we drink more water it will help dilute the waste product in our bellys. But, personally I like the idea of carry a toothbrush and paste.

OMG Laurel ty for asking that quesiton. I really wanted to know the answer to that. I mean i had the surgery on 9/2 and i have to take a shower twice a day. My urine is gross and my sweat is nasty too. Mr DR said it was the vitamins but now i know better. TY guys so much i really needed it. I'm talking to my friends and telling them to TELL ME IF I SMELL. they are like we dont wanna hurt your feelings now i have a valid explination. i mean i was starting to feel horrible. i was drinking killer amounts of water to get rid of it and still not working...gerrrrrrrrr

Thanks for all of the input. I guess I will use all of the pointers that were given. Lots teeth brushing, rinsing, mouth fresheners/strips, water. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I am doing a lot of "homework" to prep for my banding time, when ever that will be. Hopefully soon!!
