I need help writing an appeal letter to the insurance company, can anyone give some help. I don't show any Dr. supported weight loss programs in the last 3 yrs. Jim

JIm, Send me your e-mail address and I will send you a copy of what I used for an appeal letter. I don't know what ins. co. you have, but it is pretty generic that way. And just a suggestion, Talk to your PCP and ask them to start you on a "supervised" diet of some sort. From the time I started this journey until my surgery date, I could have had almost a year of documented dieting if I had known. Elizabeth redstormy2003 at yahoo.com

My ins co, John Deere Select, had a requirement for previous supervised diet attempts but of course since ins never covers weight loss I never went to the dr for that specifically. I was approved upon my first letter. In that letter, I listed every single diet plan I had ever been on, beginning weight, duration, pounds lost, and year. This history went back to when I was only 15 years old. Even if I was only on the cabbage soup diet for 6 days, it got listed! Of course I could only list estimates but when I got done, I was even shocked by it! Over the years I have collectively lost 300# but worked my way up to my present weight of 325! I added a comment stating that I had discussed several plans with my doctor but he had not formally followed me on them as I had been to the office to see him for other things at the time. That along with my co-morbities seemed to carry enough weight for the ins co to accept me. Good luck! Michelle

Hi Jim, I too did not have any doctor supervised diet history but when I sat down and started listing every diet I have ever tried I found I remembered back to when I first started diet pills and dieting at the age of 12. Needless to say, as I started my list from age 12 to now (49) my hand started to cramp up from all the writing. Because of my other health issues I too was approved after my first request. Good luck
