Having problems eating
I'm just wondering if anybody else has had problems with eating. I'm 3 weeks post-op and for 2 days I felt really gaggy, so the Dr. told me to go back to liquids, which I did. I feel better, but i cannot get myself up to the amount of meals I should be having. (All I've had today is a fruit smoothie with my protein and a beef stick) The thought of eating just makes me uncomfortable. Everytime I do eat, I get really gassy and have to lay down until things calm down. All my bodily functions are working fine, so I don't think I have a blockage or anything, I just don't want to eat. If anyone has any similar experiences or any ideas please let me know. Thanks!
Sue,
I know a woman who dumps mildly (gets gassy and a little crampy and nauseaus) when she eats any fruit. And depending on the beef stick...most of them have very high fat levels that also will make some people dump. I try to stick with beef jerky..original not marinated...it has hardly no fat and sugars. If you dont think that is the problem... my dr. put me on anti nausea medication because i got really gaggy whenever i tasted anything that tasted mildly sweet...even if it was just flavored with splenda or nutrasweet. The flavor gagged me terribly. Hope this helps. ~~~Dawn Phillips
Here are a few things that I did and I had good results with- by all means follow your doctor or dietician's advice though since I am neither. I would take a bite of food every 2 minutes, chewing thoroughly and letting it settle a bit before taking the next one. I mean I really looked at a clock every time I took a bite or read like 4 pages of my book in between bites to keep my mind off the next bite. I stayed away from fruits, I was scared of the sugar content in them and my dietician said no juices. I would eat a canned (rinsed off) pear half, some cottage cheese or baked potato with some sour cream, and chicken breast for lunch. Some people have problems with chicken, my problem was with beef. Really concentrate on your chewing. There were times that I HAD to eat, because my appetite was gone... it is a strange feeling since I never really felt that way before. Try somthing different if you think that would work, like breakfast for dinner- I LOVE malt-o-meal with a packet of Splenda. Bananas were about the only fruit that really ate when I was first post-op. Some canned pears, too. Green beans with butter buds on them... Or treat yourself and go get a KFC kids meal- chicken leg, mashed taters and applesauce cup. You feel like you are living large because yu are eating fast food, but really it is all the things you CAN have. Just check that sugar content on that applesauce. Do not drink while eating, if you absolutely HAVE to, take sips to wash your mouth clean. Let me know if any of this helps. Good luck and congrats on everything. Hopefully you will feel like a million bucks real soon. ~Julie
