Alive and Kickin'!
Hi everyone...this is Dawn. Just wanted to let you all know im home and doing ok, except im very very sore, weak & tired. I start my physical therapy on Monday morning. I'm hoping to feel good enough to get back to work by Wednesday, knock on wood. Thank you all for the cards, email and kind words that helped me to pull through this scarey time.
For those of you who don't quite understand what happened...here goes....
The weight loss surgery itself is not what caused this last hospital stay. I went to the emergency room with Acute KetoAcidosis...or really really high blood sugars causing high carbonmonoxide levels in my blood..so there wasn't any room for oxygen. My whole family was called in..they said their was a good chance i could have died. Im too tough to die! or too ornery..or stubborn or ...etc...lol. My surgeon failed to have correct and thorough job of following up, or even having the knowlege TO follow up with my blood sugars after my surgery. All his diabetic patients up until this point have simply had their blood sugars go down. Therefore he assumed that mine would do the same. As you can guess I am having some harsh feelings for my surgeon right now. But something good has came from my misfortune. As of immidiately, all diabetic patients that go thru my surgeon will have mandatory follow up, and control by the diabetes center at the hospital. So i guess at least something good came out of all this. I have lost a total of 29 lbs so far (in 2 weeks!). That is another definate plus.
Talk to you all later,
Dawn Phillips
Hugs, Dawn! I am glad to hear that you are home and recuperating. I am SO proud of your weight loss, and to think it is just the beginning. SOrry I haven't been a very good angel, there are no good excuses and I am really sorry that I haven't called. You have been in my thoughts and prayers continuously. Take it easy and make sure to give us updates often and ask any post op questions that you may have. Love Julie
Dawn, So glad to see you posting again. I checked the board every day to see if you posted something. Thank goodness you are going to be ok I thought about you frequently.I am having my surgery a week from tomorrow but not as invasive as yours having the lap band, but I am diabetic and will make darn sure I check my blood sugars often after surgery. Continue to get better. Roxanne

Hi Dawn- it's so good to see you on here again! I was'nt aware of the grave seriousness of what happened to you other than the fact your blood sugars skyrocketed. Hope it may be possible in time that your diabetes can be controlled as your weight goes down. Congrats on your 29# off- although that is just a side benefit compared to coming out of this crisis with your life!
The surgeon should name the follow-up program the "Dawn Plan"!!!! Keep on losing!!! Michelle
