vitamins and stuff
I know that this is probably different for everyone, but I'm just curious as to how much vitamins and protein supplements people have to take after the surgery? Is it expensive stuff? My mom is really worried that I'll have surgery and not be able to afford the stuff I need to keep me healthy.
Also, you have to take iron right? When I was pregnant it made me SO sick it was horrible, I couldn't take it at all. Does this happen to anyone now? I'm sure it was just because I was pregnant but I just wanted to ask anyway.
Always consult with your dietician or doctor before making any decisions. I took 2 children's chewable vitamins and 4 chewable tums (I used wal-mart brand) for calcium every day. The dietician gave me a chart that laid out how much protein I should take a day, but I do not take the supplements... I get enough out of my food. After about 4 months I switched to pills for vitamins and kept taking the calcium supplements chewable because the pills made my pouch feel heavy. I never took iron nor was told to. You can get protein supplements at GNC, Wal-Mart, or a bunch of other places. Look for a powder called beneprotein, it is powdered egg whites that you add to your food and it boosts your protein intake by 8 grams per serving. Hope this helps!! ~Julie
Jami, That is my main worry also, I got a list from my surgeon at the consultation, they are, multiple vitamin, one a day, vitamin B12 one 500 micrograms daily or 1000 injected each month, iron, once a day, calcium 1000 mgs. day plus zinc 10 to 20 mds daily if i start losing my hair, stool softner. These are the rest of my life. I am going to go check prices this weekend on this stuff so I will have an idea. Not counting the protein shakes, which I really hate. But I think the thing that scares me the worse is being sick, I don't want to get sick all the time. I have a really sensitive stomach as it is and that part really scares me. I will let you know what I find out about the vitamins ok.
My opinion is not because of my Dr. or a nutrtionist, because if I listened to them, I would only be relying on my protein from food and maybe one multi per day. My information about nutrients and protein requirements come from people who are farther out from me and who have maintained their wt loss, feel and look good (no gray ghosts) and have optimum lab results. So, I take a multi, calcium citrate (not carbonate that is in Tums or Viactive chews), zinc, potassium, Glucosamine, ferrous gluconate (Iron) and not ferrous sulfate, Vit C and B12. I also drink 1-2 protein shakes per day (30g).
Another way to look at it. The cost of supplements for your health, do they equal what you spend on junk food?
