I went to a seminar lastnight(6/23/03). I had my mind set on having the roux-en-y done, but I owuld like to know some more information from people how have had the gastric-banding done, and who it has worked for them. I am concerned with both proceedures, especially the roux-en-y since there is a 1% death rate, and there is .0003%, if that with the banding. I am concerned about having the port inside me, and the possiblity of my body rejecting it. I hope someone can help me.

Sabrina- Here is my experience. I had my surgeon all set up to do the VGB convinced it was the route to go but the day before my consult I had read so many entries about people having to have it revised or regaining their weight that I changed my mind. I am at 54 BMI which is maybe larger than yourself so for me, I need the extra restrictions imposed by the RNY. The more I read about the procedure the more comfortable I became with it. The point is: EDUCATE EDUCATE EDUCATE yourself until you are absolutely sure it is the best solution for YOU! The WLS website is the most comprehensive site I have found with answers to the most practical questions from those who have been there. Michelle

This is what I have learned in all my reseach regarding the differences between VBG (verticla banding) and the RNY procedures. With VBG it will only restrict the amount of food you consume. The absorption of that food remains unchanged. Most people lost weight because they are eating less. However if you continue to consume high calorie food, the weight will come off very slowly of even stop. The RNY restricts your food intake (small stomach) and the absorption fo the calories (because a portion of the intestines is bypassed) The surgery has a higher success rate. Some people will feel sick if they eat food to high in sugar or fat (VGB patient won't). My family doctor told me that vertical banding was an obsolete procedure and recommended the RNY since it has a higher success rate. I hope this information helps. - Janine.

I haven't heard that many successes with the banding. Although it really hasn't been out that long. When I had my VBG done in 97, the University of Iowa was one of the facilities trialing the banding and I got the name of a person who had it done and called her. (This was done before the FDA approved the procedure). She wasn't pleased with the results at all. And it was inflated as far as it could go. You may want to check out www.yahoogroups.com and search for a banding group and ask questions.
