Help! Protein Shakes are nasty.
Does anyone have any good recipes for protein shakes. I am now just starting to try them to get use to them and yuck! Is there a special way to make them. I got some samples from vitalady and tried the chocolate, just with water and it sure didn't stay down long. What am I doing wrong? Is there a different way to get the protein you need after surgery or what do you all think? I have a very sensitive stomach anyway and I'm sure that don't help matters, any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated. I have a consultation comming in June. I'm sure insurance will turn it down but I'm ready to fight them tooth and nail with the backing of three Drs. Thanks everyone, this site has been my salvation. I love it. It helps me feel like I'm not alone anymore.

Hi Tina- I've read that trying the shakes before surgery is irrelevent because your tastes change so much afterward. Go to General Nutrition store- they have a multitude of products and well-versed clerks who can help if you let them know what you need and what you are having done. I look upon the protein drinks as just a necessary evil to get me where I want to go. All will depend upon what is tolerated after surgery. I plan to buy several containers of different brands (I am starting to stock up now to spare the expense later) so I will have some variety. I suppose the ones I don't like as well could always be mixed with yogurt or in a smoothie to disguise the taste. I am also stocking up on SF kool-aid and Crystal Light since it is so expensive. This research stage is fun! Michelle
First off, I want to make sure you know that I am not a doctor and that you should always follow the advice of your surgeon or nutritionist. I have not had any protein shakes. I don't care for the taste of them. I informed my surgeon of this and he said to try to get as much protein in my food as possible. There also is a product that you can add to your food, they sell it through TPC but you can also ask your dietician about it- it is called beneprotein. Basically its powdered egg whites. They have no taste to them, and they mix well with just about everything- yogurt, mashed taters, milk etc. I am thrilled that this board has helped you, too. I think it is great to have support, we all need it before, during and after this procedure. Good luck and if you have any questions, shoot me an email or post it here!! ~Julie
