New to the Board in Cedar Rapids

Hi everyone!  I have been reading the board for a few days and decided to bite the bullet and post!

I am new here and hoping that this board will be a support for me as I go forward with my WLS.  I have been overweight my whole life and finally made the decision to have by-pass.  I have had my 1st consultation with the surgeon, finished my 6 month supervised diet, had a sleep study (yes I have sleep apnea), had my psych eval (no issue there), and paper work has been submitted to my insurance company.  So now I wait the 2-3 weeks to be approved (hopefully) and then schedule my surgery!  I am nervous but ready to do this.  I don't want to live this way anymore and feel this crappy.

Any input on what to expect pre and post op, tips about how to handle the liquid diet and pureed diet stages, etc would be awesome!!!

Hi Marci!

Welcome to the Iowa Forum.  It's a great place to be.

I am glad to hear you say you're nervous.  I think everyone is because we don't know what to expect in our situation.  I was nervous when I found out I was scheduled for surgery but as the time got closer to the surgery date, I felt very comfortable with my decision.  I knew I was in the best hands with Dr. Jamal and his team.

As you progress to the different eating plans, you'll adjust to them just fine.  Think about all the different diets you've been on in your life and how motivated you are to follow them.  The liquid and pureed eating plans are just the same.  We follow them so we can have great results.  I remember being post-op and doing the blended liquid diet from day 8-28 and thinking that I'd never be able to eat anything else because I was so full eating just the blended liquids (skim milk, double milk puddings, cream soups, etc).  As your pouch heals, you're able to move to the next eating plan with a smooth transition.  I think you need to remember to take it slowly and follow the bariatric team's instructions to a T.  They will take good care of you and you have to trust that they know what they are doing.  That's how you know you have selected the correct surgeon!

Keep posting and let us know how things are going for you.  Hopefully you'll hear very soon from your insurance company.

Have a great week!
Carol

Carol,

Thanks for the wecolme and calming words!!  I am sure you are right that I will do just fine, but I still worry, that's just how I am

Has anyone on the board had a DS as opposed to Lap Band or Bypass?  I was wondering how that went, as someone suggested that I look into DS b/c of my higher BMI...

Thanks again for the warm welcome!
