Hey guys!  I will be having the Laparoscopic RNY with Dr. Lamasters when I finally get through insurance requirements.  I'm just looking for other people to talk with who are also her patients.  I think it's always great to find others going through the same thing and with the same surgeon!

Hi Kari!  I'm a Dr. LaMasters patient too. I first met her last week. I immediately liked her.

I first thought I wanted a lapnand. Sounds like an easier surgery, but when she told me it would be unlikely for me to meet my ultimate goal,

Then we talked about laproscopic RNY. I think I'd like to do that one.

I just know that I'm someone who needs to quick weightloss, or I get bored, discouraged, whatever...if the pounds aren't coming off as soon as I'd like.

She said its up to me, that she will do whatever I decide. I have COPD and wondered about that and being anesthized, but didn't seem too worried.

I have to do a 6 month supervised diet, so I do have time to think about it.

It is nice to find others goinng thru the same thing.

We can talk whenever you'd like too

Nancy,

I also first thought LapBand was the right choice for me--until I researched it.  I think I wanted a quick surgery and quick recovery.  However, when I really delved into the research I realized the LapBand just wouldn't give me the results I wanted and it is far too easy to cheat with.  I had decided on the Lap RNY before I went to the information seminar and that just solidified my decision and then Dr. Lamasters supported that decision at my consultation.
I am doing my supervised diet right now as well.  When will yours be done?  I have a weird situation in that my insurance currently requires a 12 month supervised diet but is changing that to 6 months Jan. 1, 2009.  I will complete 6 months in October and we are going to see if my insurance will approve me then since the plan requirements will be changing within a couple months.

Looking forward to talking with you more!

Kari

Hi Kari,

I just started my 6 month diet last week. So I won't be done til the first of March next year. It sucks!

I'm on disability for fibromyalgia and COPD, so i have Medicaid. I know they will pay for lap band, but I'm hoping they'll pay for the lap RNY too. The insurance person in the office told me that they're pretty strict in the 6 month thing.  Its like now i've decided, lets get it done!

I know what you mean about the lapband. With my COPD, the anesthesia is an issue for me, but I talked with my pulmonary Dr. last time I was there, and she thought it would be fine. I go see her in September, so we'll check again.

I thought lapband would be quicker and easier surgery. Dr. LaMasters told me I won't lose all that i want to lose with it, abnd it takes longer. But I know me, if I don't see results fast enough, I won't want to continue. Plus with fibro, exercise is hard right now.

Here is my real email [email protected]
This one goes in my junk mail and I don't always check it....Its nice to talk to someone doing the same thing with the same Dr.

Hi. I am a patient of hers, too. I'm finally having surgery soon after a cancer diagnosis put me on hold for a year. I'm just waiting for a date, I have everything done and I am ready to go. Send me a private message, I can give you my email address if you want to talk.

Hi Kari, I'm also from Ames and had my lap band with Dr. LaMasters on May 14 a couple of weeks before she had her baby.  I whole-heartedly recommend her - her knowledge, skill, bedside manner - all wonderful!!!  She also repaired my hiatal hernia at the same time and I've had no heartburn since!    I'm down about 42# and 6 BMI points and feel great - have another 70# or so to go... I'll be at the Walk from Obesity in Waukee tomorrow morning and usually go to the city gym a couple of evenings per week - do you go there?  It's amazing how much easier excercise is even with what I've lost so far.  I've gone to every support group meeting but one - hope to meet you!

You had your LapBand placed the same week I had my first consultation with Dr. LaMasters :)  She is fabulous!  My mom went with me to the information seminar and really liked her.  I think (well I know) my mom was very nervous about this whole process and had a few questions and she told me she left the info seminar feeling much better about it.  She said she had only a couple questions and Dr. LaMasters thoroughly answered them during her presentation.

I'm so glad you've had such great success so far!  I am SO looking forward to my surgery.  You can read my blog on my profile to get the whole story--it has been a struggle with insurance.  Just this past week I've had a breakthrough with them and it's looking like I'll probably be having surgery in November!

I went to the support group meeting in June.  I really enjoyed it and I have wanted to go to them every month but in July I was out of town and then each month since I've been working!  My work schedule should be changing back soon so I should be able to attend them again.

I don't go to the city gym...to be honest I'm not even sure where that is! LoL  I really haven't been exercising--with a BMI has high as mine just doing everything in my life that needs to get done is tiring as it is.  I do have a treadmill at my house that I try to get on occasionally.  This is one aspect I really need to work on but right now it's just so difficult!

I wasn't able to attend the Walk from Obesity this morning because I had other things going on--I really wish I could have been there!

Keep in touch!

Kari~
I am from Jewell and I am LaMasters patient too.  I got my surgery on the 24th of Sept.  I had to have a totally different surgery then the lab or bypass.  But am sooooooo happy with her and the WHOLE group down there.  I have sent 2 people to her so far.  I have Lupus, Fibro, Asthma......so the other surgeries were not a option for me.  I had the vertical sleeve and that one is not offered alot.   Email me and maybe we can get together and talk.   Or anyone else in the area.
Thanks
Nicki
