New to site and 3 weeks post op and frustrated please help
My name is Stephanie and I had my surgery on July 15th so I am 3 weeks out. At my first follow up appointment I had lost 16.5 pounds in just over a week. Then they put me on a soft diet and now I have GAINED 3 pounds. Has anyone experienced this? I am following what they told me to do and now I am just getting frustrated. I was expecting to see the pounds keep coming off not gaining pounds back. I also feel like when I eat canned chicken/tuna it is constantly getting stuck in my esophagus. Even when I have yogurt this can happen. Any advice would be great....Thanks
Hi Stephanie,
Call the office where surgery done through, I think you are right on track even though you have had a gain. Don't weigh yourself every day because you will only get frustrated beyond where you are right now. Maybe there are other things that you should be eating right now instead of the tuna/chicken, I am sure if you give yourself more time you will be able to eat those things again, you are still new so take it slow, make other choices with food and check with the doctor's office. Also go to the support group, you will hear lots of useful information there and maybe someone else has a solution for your frustrations.
Have a good day!!

Stephanie,
If you are having concerns you should call your doctor's office.
Weight gain can be very normal. While you are in the hospital they give you a lot of IV fluids and you will dump that all off in the first couple of weeks and can get dehydrated by not taking in enough fluids. As you start to rehydrate your weight can go up.
Tuna and chicken (especially chicken) can be very difficult for RNY patients to eat. Many can't ever eat chicken!! Try a different protein and see how it goes.

Hi Stephanie,
I'm Darcy, new to Iowa but am 2.5yrs post op. Just a couple of little things that I did to help get through the first couple of weeks/months:
--cottage cheese
--scrambled eggs
--yogurt
--tuna w/ no flavor yogurt to make moist (or canned chicken)
This was is my main source of protein. I also found that if I ate too fast I would get food stuck. It is really a hard thing to do but you really must slow down when eating. I found that my meals were cold by time I was done eating but I maintained and pushed through. I have lost 130lbs and fluctuate with 5 lbs every month. It happens!! BUT don't weigh yourself everyday as you will get frustrated. Support group is a wonderful thing as well!! I'm in the process of looking for a support group in my area but am having no luck, they are all 30+ mins away. Think I will try to start my own group, if anyone is interested!!
I wish you luck and keep up the good job!! You will see that light at the end of the road. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to contact me: [email protected].
Take Care--
