Has anyone who is more than a couple years out needed iron infusions for anemia?  My iron level is in the dumpster since the pancreatic surgery.  Can't seem to get it up and I'm really tired of feeling crappy.   Lyn

Lyn, I was diagnois with severe anemia this past spring. My doctor was very aggressive with treatment, 3 rx iron tablets of 350 mg each a day. He wanted to try that first and see what would happen and try to avoid doing the infusions. Infusions have to be done in an OR orignally due to a bad reaction to the iron itself. If you can avoid it I would do it at all costs. I had my blood tested 3 weeks after starting the iron pills and I had enough improvement in my blood work that the dr. wanted to continue this treatment.  Thank goodness he did now my blood level is looking ok. We have not tested my reserves and will do that in a couple of weeks to see how things are going. Sorry to hear you are having trouble. I hope that you get better soon. Stephanie

My hemoglobin fell to 6 after my revision.  My surgeon gave me a shot  of iron and it brought it up right away.  They gave a small amount first and then waited a while to see if I would react and then gave me the rest.
