I had my psych eval today and that went REALLY well. I expect her to get an approval letter to Dr Eibes quickly.

I sent a release of records to my dr. I have been seen 3-4 times in the last 2 years for cold/ ear infection etc. That's it. Other than taking my weight, the records have no real bearing on weightloss attempts. I just have bad feeling that the insurance company is not going to overlook that no matter how high my BMI is.

I am somewhat concerned about the same thing. I dont have a whole lot of records specifically about obesity, b/c I tried dieting, exercise on my own. I guess we need to just submit what we have and see what happens. You can always try again! Dr LaMasters said that if you dont have enough records that most of the time you can do a medically supervised diet for 6 months and that is enough. Their dietician would give you a plan and you would meet with your pcp each month. She suggested starting that right away, so if you do get denied you are already partially done with the 6 month timeframe.  HTH!

That's a good idea. I will need to find another dr though as my pcp is not very enthusiastic about Lapband

I don't know how high your BMI is, but mine was very high and I didn't have a medical history.  I wrote a letter to be included with all the other stuff being sent by the surgeon's office.  I explained why I didn't have a medical history--lack of insurance, not getting meaningful help, remembering things like phen-fen, etc.  I also included photos from several years documenting that the weight was a chronic issue.  And I had some Nutrisystem receipts to throw in just for good measure.  I didn't have any probelm with approval. It is all up to the insurance companies, and many require a 6 month weight loss program regardless.  Not that it will harm most people, but it is a big delay. Good luck, Sally

I didn't have much for medical records either and have only been seeing my current PCP since October of last year.  I didn't do a 6-month weight loss program either and I was approved in 3 days with BCBS. Shannon

Sally, who is your insurance company? I dont have much for medical records, but I do have Weigh****chers paperwork for 4 months I am kind of hoping that and my high BMI will help me get approval with BCBS.. This is so stressful!

Mine is BCBS of Iowa.  My BMI was about 66 at the time.  I would definitely submit the Weigh****chers records.

Good luck,

Sally

I currently have Coventry. Dr. Eibes should have my pitiful records and my phych eval.   I do not want to call every three days to see if letters have been sent or if I have been approved cuz I think it would make me nuts.       My annual enrollment for benefits is coming up and I may have the option to switch to BCBS at that time. If Coventry is unreasonable I may switch.

Whatever company you go with make sure that they cover weight loss surgery.  That should be stated in their exclusions, explanations of benefits, etc.  Some companies chose to exclude wls to reduce overall insurance costs.  So not all  policies by the same insurance carrier will be the same.  You want to look at the specifics before you change.  I have had excellent service with BCBS. Good luck, Sally

I am stressing about the same thing.  I don't have any medical records about my weight.  I always tried to handle it on my own.  I'm starting the supervised diet on Friday because with my luck I'm pretty sure that's the road I'm going to have to go down.  Plus I'm at the low end of the BMI so I'm certain I'm going to have to do this 6 months.
