Hey Jen!
OMG! Moving,,,,again! That's the military for ya!
As far as I know, the RNY will NOT stop you from moving on. You are healthy and that's what they are making sure of. You should be fine.
Let us know if you find out otherwise, k?
Love and miss you!

Topic: Military and moving to Kauai!
Hey all,
My husband is getting order to PMRF in Kauai. I had my RNY just about 2 years ago and I have lost 125lbs. I have not had any complications and I feel great!
My question is. I just found out we need overseas screenings to go to Kauai. I saw they can deny you orders because of RNY. Has anyone had a problem with this, or do you know if it is true.
I am also looking to talk to people on Kauai so I can get more info abou it. Drop me a line so we can chat!
Thanks,
Jen Mays

Coffee
I often get asked “If I have coffee, what has the lowest calories?" Black coffee or iced tea is virtually calorie free. It’s when you order the mochas, caramel macchiatos, flavored lattes, and frappuccinos that the calories, fat, and carbohydrates can add up. You should avoid caffeine for the first 2-3 weeks following surgery as caffeine is not necessarily a hydrating fluid and in fact can be dehydrating. Once you do decide to have coffee, black coffee or tea is your best choice. If you add cream, try to keep it to small amount of non fat or soy milk. A small mocha made with 2% milk (without whipped cream) has 200 calories, 6 grams of fat and 31 grams of carbohydrate. The calories only increase with blended frappuccinos and/or additional flavored syrups. If you do decide to have something different once and awhile, the lowest calorie option would be a small non-fat cappuccino (espresso, foam and milk) or a small non-fat latte (espresso and milk). Chose wisely!

Topic: Ohana Insurance Coverage
Is anyone aware of a surgeon that accepts Ohana (medicaid) insurance for bariatric surgery in Hawaii? I am a physician and have a patient who weighs >400 lbs and needs a referral for surgical evaluation, but she only has Ohana insurance coverage.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Staying on Track
It can be quite easy to veer away from your usual healthy eating ways. Some common deterrents might be vacationing, traveling, family/friends visiting, or those special occasions & holidays. Try to stick to your guns when faced with these situations. Focus on 2 main things:
- Aim for 3 meals, avoid grazing and snacking! - Protein and vegetable at meal times are always the best choice Most importantly, if you found yourself straying and making other choices, make sure it comes to an end and the “bad" foods and snacks go home with your visitors and don’t stay in your cupboards. Its okay to try new foods or to have bites of your favorite food item on special occasions but make sure it starts and stops there. As always, let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. I hope everyone is well! ~ Amy

Constipation & Bowel Movements
It is common to experience constipation immediately following surgery due to the anesthesia and/or pain medications which can have constipating effects. True constipation is not having a bowel movement for 3-4 days. To help with staying regular and to help facilitate a bowel movement, get plenty of water and adequate fiber in your diet. As always, it is good to aim for 64 oz of fluid/day. Aim to get your fiber from vegetables, fruit and whole grains. Don’t forget exercise! Daily activity and exercise also help to get the bowels moving.

Open RNY. I just feel like such a big failure! I know I'm being pretty hard on myself, but I never should have let myself gain so much weight with my pregnancies! I'm thinking first things first is to get strict on portion sizes and calories.. I'll keep everyone updated.. It's still too early for me after childbirth to start a new exercise routine, but in about four weeks I should be cleared. Thanks for your support and reply! :)
