What pain meds did you use?

I asked my surgeon what pain meds she would use and she said Tylenol with Codeine... Problem is, I'm allergic to codeine!! She was like, "oh.. that's a problem.. well, I'll figure something out" And that something may be having to crush up pills... YUCK! and what if I'm not handling food well right away?!?!?!? Goodness... I've read of alot of people having IV meds, but I wonder if that's only for open RNY?? I don't know, but she says the Tylenol with codeine is the only pain med in liquid form. I know there is an Ibuprofen that is, but that can't possibly be strong enough. I have some of my own theory's being a nurse and all, but wondering what other docs have used. OH - and specifically - anyone ever given Toradol? or Keterolac? (generic name) We use it all the time on C-section patients, but she said she didn't like it cause it can cause bleeding... hmmm.... Thanks!

I had IV pain peds/ PCA (patient controlled analagesia). My doc gave me demerol in my IV pump because I am also sensitive to condiene. Not alleric but it causes extreme stomach pain. I know some docs use dialudid in the IV pain pump after surgery. I was Lap RNY so no its not just with open procedures. You will find you have very little to no pain. Once I was release I was given Lortab Elixir for pain. I didn't need it but I enjoyed the loopyness and how it put me to sleep so I took it anyways at night before bed. Steffie

Hello!! I had dilauded through a PCA pump, and it worked wonders. After that they started giving me Lortab in liquid form. I also had a Q-Ball, which had Marcaine in it that was going into where my drain was to give direct anesthetic---it was awesome---I never was bothered by the drain or anything. I had my procedure done laprascopically. I know what you mean about crushing pills, it is NASTY...I started taking some of my regular meds the other day, and I first tried to take them, and it made me gag so bad....so now I just cut them really tiny---I bought a pill cutter for it, and it works!!

Thanks gals! I'm feeling more confident each time I'm able to work through one of my concerns! Another person told me I ought to find out what my pharmacy over here carries and offer that list to the surgeon. It just bothered me that she said there were "No other liquid pain medications out there". She just had a few of those quirks about her! Anyways, it looks like you guys did okay, so I'll quit worrying about it now! he he...

Checking with the pharmacy is a really good idea...I'm sure there are plenty of pain killers in liquid form. Some people do OK with cutting pills really small, but even still I am having a hard time doing that. Just be persistent in what you want!!!!
