Update: Done with Dietician Consult
Man, that was an eye-opener. I forget what the lady's name is but her office is in that building across from Straub's Emergency Room. She was very nice and answered every question and addressed every concern that I had. When they put me on that scale I wanted to die. I was far heavier than I thought I was. Christ, that was bad. But a least I was in the right place to fix that. =P
I'll post more when I get home. *lol* I didn't want to forget to update you all.
Hey Mark,
You have to start some place right? I totally understand what you're saying about being surprised with seeing your actual weight, as most scales at the doctors office wasn't able to weigh me either. But I reached one personal goal, I can now be weighed on the doctors scales like everybody else. Whoo hoo! I got a long ways to go, but it's nice to at least be able to do that.
Glad to hear you're moving forward on your road to "the losing side".
Keep us posted!
Aloha, Kris
P.S. Heading to Vegas next week, gotta try and win some money to pay for this surgery! Yeah right!
Hey, Kris. What you said about the doc's scale not being able to weigh you is the same for me. That's one of my goals; to be able to weigh myself at the doc and not to have to go to the Dietician's office or the use the electronic scale at the gym. Normally, I would have shied away from wanting to know; but I know it's time bite the bullet and swallow my pride. You've got to start somewhere. Gotta win some battles before you can win the war.
Lean proteins; which means fish, chicken, and tofu? Is tofu a protein? Absolutely no beef or pork. It actually depends on the cut, but I decided to just cut it out to make things easier.
Starch; which means pasta, corn, peas, wheat bread (at least 3-5 grams of fiber).
Vegetables. Pretty much as much as I want. Nothing fried or stewed. Preferably steamed.
Avoid fried stuff. No sodas. See the hard thing about going on this diet, or any diet at all, is my culture. I'm Filipino and my family is very traditional. Almost any vegetable-related meal they cook has lots of sodium in it. Then there's the adobo, pork gisantes, lumpia, halo halo, etc. I can't touch that stuff but it's around me, every day. Our main protein staples are corned beef, vienna sausage, and spam. The pantry is stocked heavily with the stuff.
I'm not complaining or anything. Far from it. Just frustrated. I just want to do a good job of it.
I know exactly what you mean about the culture! I'm Chinese/Hawaiian... fried foods such as noodles and fried rice, roast pork, char sui is no longer part of my eating habits. At least I can eat steamed fish, steamed veggies and brown rice (although I don't know any chinese restaurants that serve brown rice! ) After the surgery I won't be able to eat Hawaiian food at my aunts restaurant (Helena's Hawaiian Food) either...I think I can only eat the raw fish and 1/2 cup poi. No more fried butterfish collar, kalua pig, pipikaula short ribs (what they're known for), tripe stew, luau squid, etc. It's gonna be an up hill battle. But I've been doing great with my eating habits and just have to stay away from certain restaurants. It's all about eating healthy and making the right choices. WE CAN DO IT!!
I'm using the same nutritionist and they are soooo great!! Is Dr. Balfour your surgeon? I'm REALLY hoping to get my surgery date with him soon. I've completed all my pre-op but there was a question with my EKG so I'm having to do a stress test. I'm also supposed to be losing weight but finding it VERY difficult.
GOOD LUCK on your journey/wish you all the best!
Take care,
Jamie
Yep, my surgeon will be Dr. Balfour. I'm trying to schedule an appointment as we speak. So far the diet has been going great. My endurance has improved and that makes me quite happy. Walking short distances used to be a trial for me, but now it's just an inconvenience. ^^ I think I lost a few pounds but I don't want to weigh myself until next weekend when I see the dietician again. ^^ Updates are forthcoming.
