A compression shirt is a tight-fitting shirt made of spandex or some other stretchy material. They are very breathable and are usually worn under a regular rugby jersey. They are excellent moisture managing garments and can help wick moisture away from the body more efficiently, keeping the player cooler and drier. These shirts cut down on excess muscle vibration which can cause extra fatigue as well as prevent chafing. Compression shirts also keep the body slightly warmer to prevent injury to the muscles and joints. Some compression shirts are also made for cold weather and keep the body extra warm during play.
For us gastric bypass people it's like a girdle, especially with all that extra skin and jiggly goodness. It's embarassing, at least to me. I need to compress everything from my thighs to my neck to keep everything from jiggling. Without the spandex, things like jumping jacks are really uncomfortable when the skin gets flapping.
