RNY stands for Roux en Y. It is the "gold standard" of gastric bypass. You have the "Roux" limb and the "y" limb. This represents the portion of the intestines that are bypassed and reconnected. Here is a good source to read. http://www.homanmd.com/RouxENY_Gastric%20Bypass.htm This site has a diagram photo that illustrates the RNY procedure. It is called the Gold standard because of the success rate in losing the most of your excess weight as minimal post operative complications. You get not only the restrictive properties, but also the "malabsorptive" factor which aids in weight loss. Hope this helps. Steffie 213/153/120

Shannon, I had the lapband done on 4/04 and have lost about 120 pounds and swear the band was the best thing I ever did, however you have to do what is best for you. If you feel you can use the band as a tool to help you get the weight off and if you might want to get pregnant later that I say do the band......it is supposed to be a little safer. Don't get me wrong, I know a few people who have had the RNY and have still gone on to have healthy babies. Any how if you have any questions about the band, I will be happy to answer you. Linda

Once again I agree with Linda. Try the link below, it has a video of the lap band. It shows how the port is connected by a thin straw, and how when you get a "fill," it inflates the inside of the band. I used this video to show people at work the kind of surgery I had. http://www.lapbandinformation.com/surgery_flash.shtml Aloha, Paula
