My insurance excludes WLS and from what I heard even with an letter of medical necessity it most likely I still wont be approved. (though I'm hopeful) But I figure the next best option is self pay. I wanted to know if you've self paid in GA then how much, where, what Dr and what procedure. I know that I want to get gastric bypass but if I had to self-pay I would do the VSG because its cheaper and has similar weight loss results. Any feedback would be helpful!!! :)
I'm interested to know if anyone has ever been approved by Kaiser-HMO. I have an individual plan purchase through the healthcare market and my summary of benefits states Bariatric Surgery is excluded. However, when I spoke with a representative at Kaiser she stated that even though Bariatric Surgery wasn't apart of my plan benefits, I could still seek a referral/letter of medical necessity from my PCP. I'm just curious if anyone has had any success with getting approval for WLS with Kaiser-HMO. I've seen in older post about Federal Employees getting approval but that was 5 or 6 years ago... I want to see if anything has changed.

Hi Cindy,
I am not familiar with medicare, but Medicaid (Peachstate Plan) which is what I have, paid for my RNY gastric bypass surgery, a medically necessary panniculectomy (removal of the hanging stomach apron of skin), and a medically necessary breast reduction. Your primary physican hs to make a referral and you have to take photos and document every prescription lotion or powder for the rashes and irritation to go away. Also document how the extra skin effects your mobility. Even though you lost a lot of weight, that extra skin can weigh you down and weight a lot themselves. My surgery was done Peachtree Surgical and Bariatrics for the wls, performed by Dr. Larry Hobson.
My reconstructive surgery was performed by Dr. Pravin Reddy, both. I do not know if the insurance covers with medicare, but try Dr. Reddy and Dr. Stanley Okoro.
