OT... Anyone from the Bryan County area?
I live in decatur now but I am from savannah. Make sure your child gets in the magnet schools they are awsome. From what I understand richmond hill has some pretty good schools as well. But most importantly stay involved with your childs education and they will stay on top. The lunch is about 1.25. You can call me on tomorrow and I will tell u more about it at 404 484 5269
Thank You for your replies. I live in Al. now and our school lunches are $1.75, so that will be a bonus as I have three children in school. My oldest son was just in Atlanta for a school and several people were from the Savannah area. They said that Rincon has some great schools, so we are going to check out that area as well. We probably will be planning to visit the area later this month. Georgia has to have better schools than Alabama.
BTW how hard is it to get into the magnet schools. It is pretty competitive here, and our county doesn't even have magnet schools. Our neighboring county does (it is our capital)
Thanks Again for your reply,
Debbie

Savannah/Chatham county magnet schools here are great, but some other schools are fantastic, too.
I hear great things about Coastal Middle and Oglethorpe Academy (a charter school). Friends have children there.
I have personally seem some outstanding elementary schools, too numerous to mention here.
Magnets are competitive, and many times you apply (if your child meets criteria), then the applicants are picked by lottery if there are more approved applicants than slots available. There are other non-magnet good schools, too!
Lots of excellent private schools here. Public schools on the West side (Pooler/Bloomingdale) have a reputation for being really wonderful, and I can attest to that, having seen them and volunteered there. Nice neighborhoods to live in, and the housing market is booming, too, if you need a good investment.
I'm just thinking about areas close to Bryan County. Bryan has no magnets. Nice teachers, though.Best of luck to you.
I agree about the pooler/bloomingdale schools because I used to live off of garden acers way in pooler right down from the neiborhood elementry which are not magnet but nice schools. My children, however, went to the art academys Shuman and Gadson arts academy. As a matter of a fact I think Bloomingdale is also a arts academy but the school in pooler is just a regular school. I think you will like it there in Chatham county but just make sure you are in a position to sign your children up for the lottery the other poster was talking about. You will need a chatham county address before you can even apply. Also, like I said both Bryan and Effingham county schools are nice but you will get a better quality school in savannah
Thanks, Lynne. I live in Chatham County, having moved from Bryan about 8 years ago. Yes, the schools in Chatham have more variety to offer. We left Bryan after ten years or more because our daughter was going to kindergarten in the next year. We found a super home on acreage in the country near Savannah Christian school, so that's where she's going now. The school our neighbors' children went to was further from the house than Savannah Christian, and we didn't want her so far away.
Bloomingdale IS an arts magnet. The new West Chatham Elementary is in Pooler, and I volunteer there. (I love elementary, and my daughter is in middle school now). It is a terrific school, but so is the Pooler school and the one in Bloomingdale. The West Chatham school is the biggest of the three, and it's expanding soon. All of the westside schools are over-filled because of growth, and some of the midtown schools and eastside schools are older and not filled, so they may be closing in the next few years.
I agree that the first poster will not be able to apply for magnets until she has a Chatham address. It's worth it to live in Chatham, because the drive to Richmond Hill is horribly slow! With gas what it is, and the frustration level, I am happy I moved to Chatham when I did instead of waiting. I can't believe I'm "in the country" just a couple miles outside of the Savannah city limits!
