I'm sorry to hear about your hair, I think that is mine and my husbands biggest worry also. I'm lactose intolerant, but I have been able to keep down Amplify it is a protein mix from GNC..not all stores carry it. I've mixed mine with juice and have also put fresh strawberries in mine and it taste pretty good. So far I have only tried the vanillia..I also have the strawberry flavor. It comes in other flavors as well. Good luck

Melissa,
I am so sorry you are having this problem. It is one of the things I worry about after surgery because I tolerate the Isopure Zerocarb Vanilla Powder so well now I am afraid I will hate it afterward. But, the best thing I have tasted is from Susan Maria. It is those single bottled coffee mocha flavored drinks. If you like coffee I bought my Isopure powder at GNC and make my own and they are delicious. I use decaf coffee and cocoa powder. I just fiddled with what tasted good to me. Nothing straight out of the bottle did except for those. Good luck I hope you find one that works or a protein recipe you like.

If you check out my profile, you will see that I went through a period of a few months starting around month 4 or 5 until about month 7 where my hair was literally comming out in handfuls. There is no research that I know of to back me up on this, but my personal opinion is that the majority of folks who have this surgery are going to have a lot of hair loss regarless of how much protein you eat, supplements you consume or fancy hair products you use. Now, this isn't to say to everyone that you can skip the supplements and protein because it will be WORSE if you do. I would just weather out the storm and maybe get a new hair style or treat yourself to a new outfit. The hair loss WILL stop eventually; then it will grow back in. I have NEVER met a bald WLS patient

I don't keep track of it - but I can tell you that I get in my daily limits. For example, yesterday I had a total of 2 slices of cheese, 2 slices of ham, 1 scrambled egg, 1 sausage patty, and one chicken breast. That is typical of my daily intake. Sometimes I supplement and have an Unjury protein shake for breakfast.

The hair falling out is NOT just from the protein diffeciency. There are several factors that cause the hair loss such as the anesthesia, rapid weight loss, malnutrition etc. Yes increasing your protien will help to rebuild your hair follicles, but the hair loss is going to happen regardless.
My suggestion would be just to be paitent because the hair will grow back....I PROMISE! You need to make sure of a few things, you're getting in at least 100g of protein a day....this has to be spread out over the course of the day, take your vitamins - and if you're specifically worried about your hair and nails take one with good amount of vitamin C, and follow your doctors orders.
I lost hair from 4th month till about the 7th or 8th month then it slowly started to grow back. Now my hair is as thick as it was before surgery (and has a slight curl to it now...LOL) The only thing I don't like about the new hair is I have this freakish cowlick in the front of my hair
Thank God for styling products...LOL
As far as a good protein - I've found that everyone's tastes are different so you're going to have to find one that works for you. I know that takes a lot of time, paitence and money..but my suggestion of something really great to try is the power cruch bars they advertise on this site. I get mine from the Vitamin Shoppe (really - they are cheaper there.) and they are very good in my opinon.
Good luck!

thx Dee Dee,
I am trying but it is hard to get the protein in. Like I said my hair is thick so maybe it won't be to bad. I did just choke down a 20g protein shake tho so I'm happy about that. I started taking 3,000 mg biotin a few days ago as well. Does any vitamin shop carry the power crunch bars, and how much do they normally fun???
