Hey everybody, ever since I recieved my surgery date (Aug 31) I've been stuffing my face like a desparate person and even making myself sick!!! I know I shouldn't be, but has anyone else had this problem, and does anyone else have any advice? I'm gonna have 50 extra pounds to lose at this rate! Will I feel like this after?

Gretchen, You better be careful!! According to my Doctor, if you gain an excessive amount of weight (10+) before surgery, he will not do the surgery. The reason for this is that it shows that you really do not have a committment to losing weight. Before my surgery, I had all my 'last suppers' at various restaurants, but I would limit it to about 2 a week. I was so scared that I was going to gain weight, and that he would not do the surgery, but in fact I actually lost 3 pounds between my first visit with him and my pre-op visit. Also, did your doctor tell you to go on a low carb diet before the surgery? This is so that your liver will shrink, and make it much easier on you and that the doctor during surgery. Norma

OMG...no, I didn't know that! I'm sure I've gained 10! Who was your doc? And, no, nobody told me to go low carb, because My BMI was only 35 on my 1st visit and we weren't so sure I would get approved. I guess I better start low carbing now, huh? thank you!

My surgeon was Dr Michael Williams in Marietta. Call your doctor's office tomorrow and check on these items. It is not too late to make corrective action to what you have been doing. Norma

Hi Gretchen! I went to a class today at my doctors office and this is what they were telling us about the surgery and gaining weight. The reason why they want you to loose weight is so there will not be so much fat on your liver. They have to "pull" it up to reach the stomach. If the liver is too heavy, they will have to insert another rod to help keep it held up. Most doctors do not like to do that b/c it could I guess cause more problems. Its best to exercise and watch what you eat so your liver will not be so heavy. Oh my surgery date is the same day! Congratulations and dont worry, just start walking and cut down on carbs, fats and sugars. Make sure you start taking your vitamins too! I know everything is going to work out for you!

Oh, Gretchen, Been there, done that!!! Desperate is the right word. I "thought" that I might never be able to eat my favorite foods again, so I ate my "heart" out. That's not true! I would give anything right now to have not gained that extra ten (at least) pounds, then I would finally be at goal. You WILL still enjoy food. PROMISE!!! It's even better now, because I don't feel like everyone is watching to see how much I eat. Up your water intake. That may help!!! Big Hugs to you!!!! Becky
