Now that I have your attention, I need some quick advice. I recently got approved for surgery, and was told during my consultation (over a month ago) that I needed to lose approximately 30 pounds for surgery. I started off doing good but due to the long procedure of getting letter from PCP and insurance approval, I am sure that I have not lost any. I have a meeting Monday with the surgeon to go over pre-op paperwork and get my surgery date but I need to know if my surgery will get cancelled if I don't lose any weight? I have BCBS-HMO and is using Dr. Duncan. Also, will I have to do everything over again if I switch to a surgeon who does not require pre-weight loss? My WLS insurance coverage expires in December. Any advice is really appreciated.
Yes you may have your date cancelled. Dr Duncan is very serious about losing the weight he sets out for you to lose. Thereare serious medical reasons for it namely your liver. I don't think changing surgans will help much, from what I have heard most all of them have the same requirements. My suggestion is to call his office and talk to his staff. I wish you luck on you're journey
My surgeon required weight loss. However, I only lost 20 of the 30 requested. He never said anything to me. I have friends who also had the surgery that did not meet their weight loss goals. One was with Dr. Duncan. I even spoke to a lady at my doctor's office who gained 15 pounds before surgery, and she was allowed to have it. I think it is a benefit to your body to lose the weight, but lets be serious...if we could lose weight, we wouldn't need the surgery! LOL Good luck!
Phyllis, chances are, you will get a date, but Dr. Duncan does require weight loss. I was told to lose 20 lbs. and lost 12 lbs. and he did not cancel me. I think they know if you are trying to lose or not. I think you will have some time to lose weight before your pre-op which is when they do the final weigh-in for surgery. If you cut out all your bad carbs such as bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, sugar etc. you can lose. I was a great dieter for many years but got into a rut and could not lose weight for anything...lots of hormone changes, and all that stuff, but when I went low carb and high protein, I did lose some. Enough to get me to the OR for my surgery... I probably would not have lost a huge amount like that but I lost enough! Good luck to you! Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions!
