:( EGD Done...HELP!
I had my EGD done on Thursday. We already knew that I have acid reflux. But it looks like I have some damage done to my esophagus, a hiatal hernia and they did 2 biopsies where I have been having pain in the upper part of my stomach. One is at the base of the esophagus and the other is at the top curve of the stomach. My follow up appointment isnt until July. Thats when I was hoping to have surgery. hopefully I will be able to get a follow up sooner than that.
I have been patiently waiting and going through with all my appointments trying to get this done. Its been 6 months now. I am now wondering if this will keep me from having the surgery all together? Has anyone had this or anything simular?
Hoping to be a looser soon!

Kimberly,
I also had to have an EGD done (March 7) because of reflux & other problems they found when having my upper GI done in Feb. My biopsies came back ok, I had a small hiatal hernia and 8 or 9 ulcers n my stomach. After finding this out I have been on Prevacid which really helps alot!! I had my surgery Tuesday (May 3) & my hiatal hernia was small & don't think anything was done about it. So once your surgeon has your results you should be okay. Good luck & you will be a loser soon!! Cindy
I know that my friend had a hernia repaired at the same time as her RNY. I myself had acid reflux really bad before surgery. I have not had it one time since. They removed my gall bladder at my surgery because I had tons of gallstones, so maybe they will do it at the same time. Good luck to you!!!

The good news is that RNY pretty much fixes acid reflux. That's because the part of your stomach that makes the acid is what is taken off and is no longer attached. It still creates some, but it will just go down into your intesines to help digest the food. (this was in the book my surgeon had us get, plus from some of his explanations at meetings, etc) Anyway, that should just be another reason to HAVE the surgery!!
Hang in there and hope this helps.

Thank you ladies for the encouraging words. I am sorry its taken me so long to respond. My husband was home for 10 days and we have been so busy. He leaves Sunday for Iraq :o( We will be heading back down to Ft. Stewart this Thursday afteroon to spend a few more days together.
I have to call on Wednesday to find out about the biopsies. They are going to work me in for an appointment soon. The only thing I am worried about is the location of the 1st biospy. That would be my pouch area after the surgery. I am sure I am just worrying over nothing. I am just ready to get this show on the road, lol

Kimberly, don't think I've met you...
even if it is online. I certainly hope things work out for you. I'm praying for your biopsy results AND your husband's deployment. It seems like this stuff will never end, doesnt' it?
I'll add a side note to the comment regarding acid reflux. I'm at 9 months and developed really severe burning, hurting when I ate...sometimes when I didn't...sometimes it helped TO EAT a bit when I was burning, etc. My surgeon said that in the beginning the medical community, to include him. believed that the WLS would cure acid reflux just like the post said. However, he said, after having patients come to me over and over regarding this issue over a period of years, I came to know that even though you only have a small pouch left, it *does* have the capacity to produce acid and can be bothersome. He referred me to a gastrologist for what I thought was a procedure or test of some sort. Ended up he put me on Protonix, one a day before breakfast and it's pretty much done away with the discomfort and burning I had. I've skipped a pill or two on occasion and I can tell immediately, the acidity is there.
The Gastro doc seemed to think this would be a life long problem and he was in agreement that it seems that the surgery does NOT cure reflux like they once thought.
I had developed reflux probably a year before my surgery, but assumed it was strictly because of my weight. I had so hoped it would go away and for months I had NO symptoms...It started gradually at about 4.5 months or so.
At any rate, I hope things go well for you and your husband. Take care and keep us posted.
