What kind of protein do you use while on clear liquids?

Hi Loretta, It will depend on what diet regimen your surgeon requires post-op. As for me, my surgeon has his patients on a clear liquid diet for the first three weeks post-op. When I asked about protein intake, I was told not to worry about it until the second three weeks post-op when I would be moving to full liquids. I guess because most protein drinks fall under the full liquid category. Your new stomach (pouch) will be ultra sensitive and will mostly be healing up for a little while after the surgery. I guess it is best to consult with your surgeon or your nutritionist, to be on the safe side. I did make sure I pumped in the protein pre-op, however, as I had heard it would greatly help in preparing the body for healing after the surgery. And, congratulations on your upcoming date! I know you are getting really excited! Please know you will be in my thoughts and prayers as your day approaches. God bless you! Pat

Thanks Pat. I'll ask him during my next meeting on 2/3. I've been trying to increase protein also. So I'm doing so by trying protein shakes as well. My favorite so far are Atkins RTD and carb countdown. Three weeks sounds like a long time to be on clear liquids. Full liquids sounds ok but clear liquids....hello jello, water, broth, crystal light. Anything else? I'm so ready to get this show on the road.

Another good shake, in my opinion is the Advant-Edge Carb Control shakes. I get them in Walmart for $4.72 per four-pack. That is only a day supply as each has about 15 grams of proten, and you need around 60 grams daily. I really attribute my healing process post-op mainly to the shakes I pumped in, beforehand. I am 63, and I think I did better than I expected with post-op healing, considering the age factor. It's good that you are getting in that protein NOW. The clear liquids consists of anything you can see through. You can add sugar free popsicles to that, and I was told decaffeinated coffee and tea as well, in small amounts. Yes, it does sound like a long time, but it will pass before you know it...time will fly. Of course, every doctor is different..I have seen some people say that they were allowed to come home and NOT be on clear liquids. But, if you ARE placed on clear liquids...you will be so busy sipping on one thing or another throughout your waking hours, that you won't notice any hunger. My doctor told me not to sip more than 15 cc's at once and wait 15 minutes before another sip, as the pouch was only 20 cc's in size. So, I bought a timer, and I would sip, and set the timer, sip again. Did you have a Nutritional Evaluation? If so, what did your nutritionist say as far as what your intake post-op would be? Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

I used the Isopure No Carb protein starting the first day I got home - just mix with water instead of milk. Vanilla would be safest to start with & use your crystal light to jazz it up. 1 svg = 2 scoops = 50grams of protein! One 3lb. canister should get you through the 3 weeks. It's available at most all healthfood stores. My dr. sold it for $35, but I think it's more like $60 in stores (still, it comes out to about $3.00/day). My dr. counted it as a clear liquid because the protein dissolves so well. Hope that helps! Amanda 266/241/healthy! (then/now/forever)
