that the reason it is so important to learn good eating habits early on is b/c after 1-2 yrs post-op the villi in the intestines regrow in an attempt to repair themselves; resulting in more absorption of nutrients. We as post-ops will never absorb 100% of the nutrients/calories consumed, but at the 1-2 yr post-op mark it will be more than where we first started. Many of you may be thinking..."of course I know that!!" Well, somewhere along the way I missed this part. I researched this surgery for about 18 months before I had surgery and I still didn't realize this. I thought the reason that post-ops can gain weight after the "honeymoon" phase was b/c our pouch grows and we are able to consume more calories. I didn't realize that the intestines had a part in this. When this was first mentioned to me I totally didn't believe that our body could repair itself in that way! One thing I know for sure.....the body is amazing isn't it!! One more point....vitamins to include B-12 and calcium will ALWAYS need to be supplemented!! Make it a priority! I am sharing the information that I have recently learned in hopes of helping someone else out there that may have missed it too. Hugs, Tonya

Tonya, Thanks for sharing that important info, as a 2 year post op, I am well aware that bad food choices have serious consequences. My biggest fear is that I will start to regain the weight back, and this is something that I struggle with daily. Thanks again for the info... Cathy

WOW....I had thought the same thing - about the pouch re-growing some. Don't think I realized that the intenstines would work the way they do to repair themselves. THANKS for the information.
