Unexplained abdominal pain below left breast....

As of today, I am three weeks post-op, and this pain did not surface until last Wednesday. It began as a sharp pain, like pulling a muscle or something. By Saturday, it had gotten so bad that I put a call into my surgeon. It took a total of two calls to get him paged to call me back, and by then it had eased off. When he did call, I asked if I should go to the ER, and he advised that if there was a fever, nausea, or if the pain got worse to go and at least get a CT Scan. I did this, Sunday...and the CT Scan came back clean. The bottom line is that since it showed nothing, not much can be done. They gave me another prescription for pain meds and nausea pills to place under the tongue should nausea occur. My surgeon told me that he had had some patients complain of such a pain in the same area even if the CT Scan or x-rays showed nothing wrong. So, my question is...has anyone else had such an experience? It is like a sharp knife or large needle being stuck in when I try to rise from a lying or sitting position, or move a certain way suddenly. This is Tuesday, and it has been going on since last Wednesday. How long does this last? The WLS was my eighth surgery in my lifetime, (also four childbirths) but I NEVER remember anything like this. It usually brings me to tears, it hurts so bad. Thursday, I have an appointment to see my surgeon that I made before all this happened, and I am hoping he will check further and tell me it is something that can be corrected. It's not getting any better, and I am tired of hurting. I was progressing fine until this happened. Any comments?

Not sure this is the same, but had two friends in my support group who had similer pain. They were told that area is where the largest tocar (scope, whatever you call it) went in, and sometimes they have to put a staple in the muscle to put it back together. Their pain didn't happen right away, it took a couple of weeks before the pain started. One of them found great relief in walking. I'm not a medical person, but just thought I would pass this info on to you. Debbie J Duncan patient 01-14-02 lap-rny 01-15-02 leak repair surgery (non smoker, non steroid taker) 01-29-02 surgery to see if I had another leak, NO, thank goodness SEVERE COMPLICATIONS!!!! 45 days in ICU, 33 days kept alive via ventilator 30 days in a rehab hospital, had to learn to walk again Now, one happy girl........LUCKY to be alive

I did have pain in the same place at about the same time. Mine just lasted a few days. It REALLY scared me! I thought something might have come unattached. I will tell you that it seemed to get better when I used the restroom. Have you been constipated? For the first week, I used the restroom none-stop, then for about a week, I was less regular. I wondered if it was just my body healing and adjusting to the new digestive "route." I also was more careful getting up for a few days. Because I was feeling better, I would forget to "rise" gently. I think you should keep seeking help until you get relief, but I wanted you to know that I had a similar experience. I'm glad you are seeing your surgeon on Thursday! Please keep us posted. Hugs, Becky

well my mother who also had the surgery had a pain like this and first it was her GB and then the next time it happened it was a internal herina ...and they did all kinds of test and could not find the herina so they just went in to look around and found it .......so that is the only thing i can think of Laura

I had that same pain.. my surgeon said that they have to move the ribs on that side to get to where they need to work and that the pain I was feeling was the ribs (and the surrounding muscles) trying to settle back in place. It went away after a week or so - but like you it HURT when I moved a certain way or got into a certain position.

I'm fresh out of the hospital, and have similar pain. It was explained to me that it was due to the muscles swelling around where the drain was located. The gas in your abdomen pushes on these agravated muscles too. It feels like I have done a million pushups and all the pain is under the left breast, behind my ribs. I definitely feel for you. Amanda
