Preop's What you might not know...
This is just my experience and I wanted to share.
When we have this surgery the weight doesn't magically come off. Now mind you the first 6 months it usually does, but what some people don't understand is after those 6 months is when our part really has to start. Which does consist of relearning how and what to eat. That's why having a nutritionist is eccential to this new way of life, they are there to help educate us and guide us. It's hard to believe, but you CAN out eat this surgery. Example: Even though most of us can only have 3oz-8oz of food further out look at it this way. If you consumed 1oz of chips your looking at calories around 140 to 160. That's just 1oz! So if we decided to use up 3oz to 8oz that we can eat towards that look how the calories add up, which is the same for anything else that is easy to get in and has major calories such as ice cream. NOT everyone dumps!
Anyhow my whole point to my post is when you have this surgery, you need to go into this with a mind set that this surgery is NOT going to do it all for you. It requires work on your part to maintain the weight loss and to learn moderation and control. This surgery is ONLY a tool to help you, it's not a cure, it's not a magic pill and it doesn't teach you how to eat. We have made many wrong choices a long the way and now is the time to make good food choices, and learn from our past mistakes. If you want this surgery to be successful it's going to take our part too. Our outcomes do depend on us.
Also I can't stress enough how important support is! Find a support meeting near you and find a good one. In fact Obesityhelp is in the process of training local/regional chapters, which are benificial to both pre-op and post-op's (even further out). A good support group is something that is addressing your needs. It's been my experience the ones that fade away from the support, tend to get off track. I believe if you have this as a part of your life whether online or impersonal does help. It keeps you accountable. I see food as with anything that is an addiction. It's something that doesn't go away, it's something we will always have to work on.
Just my thoughts....
