Hunger/Satiety

I had my surgery on Oct. 27th. I'm doing very well so far and am extremely grateful for that. I was wondering though when the senses of hunger and satiety return. Granted, I don't exactly know what satiety "feels" like, since I always overate. I have not experienced any sense of hunger yet (not that I'm complaining). The issue I am having is that I have to remind myself to eat and then measure precisely. If I eat too much or too soon after a previous meal, it all comes right back up. I experienced a lot of that on Thursday and Friday. Yesterday, I stuck with a 1-egg omelette and pudding. Is my pouch just grouchy? Also, although I wait until 1 hour after eating to start drinking again, it's as if I can feel the water "stuck" and "floating" in my throat...like it doesn't even make it into the pouch. Is that normal?

You will learn those feelings as time goes on. It takes awhile to recognize the feeling that if you eat more you will throw it back up. Its been hard mentally because I will fix 1/2 of what would be a small sandwich on a small corn taco shell, I eat only 1/2 of that but the old tapes of I shouldn't waste it or I really haven't eaten much and so should eat the rest. Then if I try to eat the rest, it comes up. I'm learning to stop even if my my head says go. I'm learning a tightness I begin to feel when my pouch is full. Its learning the difference of head hunger and real hunger. For some reason I can't handle eggs very well yet. 1/2 large boiled egg is plenty for me.I still am limited in how much I eat. About 1/3 cup total for any meal. Its a new learning experience and it takes time to unlearn some eating patterns. You are fine

Thanks for responding. It really helps a lot to learn from you experienced folks. I'll stick with my one egg and then try to coax the water down. It's weird. On a completely empty pouch, say first thing in the morning, it's almost as if I can feel the liquid hitting "bottom". But, the rest of the time, it just seems to not quite get there. Thanks again!

Early on, I found I didn't have a "feeling of fullness" and it frankly scared me... but a couple of the veterans on the main board informed me that the nerve endings in my stomach had not yet healed, and to be cautious of my portions in the meantime. Well, at about 4-5 weeks out, they apparently healed! LOL! Cuz I can most certainly NOT eat much now. Now, mind you, there are times, that my head or my tastebuds WANT me to continue, but at least I still have that portion of my brain that realizes the consequences if overeat. So I behave...It has paid off!! Four months out...down 95 pounds...LIFE IS GOOD!! Take care Catherine...if there is anything I can do to help, let me know... I certainly had a lot of coaching and STILL do get coaching even now... -Tami

Don't forget with liquids its sip not drink. At first I couldn't drink cold liquids or my stomach would react. Try room temperature. Warm tea was good going down.

Hello Catherine! Although I haven't had my surgery (so I don't know about the eating patterns) I would like to just say congratulations on your surgery, and I wish the best for you. I find it (reading others stories) informative for those of us who haven't had the surgery yet. Thank you for sharing, and keep us posted! God Bless, Tiffany.
