What is a revision and why would you have one?

I have a theory in life....The only stupid question is the one not asked! I have wondered the same thing. From what I understand it is a "do over" of sorts for this surgery. I thought if you followed your doctors orders and changed your eating habits - the weight lost would be permanent? (Am I wrong in the assumption?) If it wasn't supposed to work as a permanent tool - then why do it? The key to the tool is actually doing those things though - right??? intresting question......can't wait to see what comes of it!

I think most people who want revisions had this surgery for the first time in the 70's or 80's before medicine knew a whole lot about it. I know this because my mother had it done back in the 70"s. At that time it was called "Stomach Stapling", where they actually stapled the stomach in half instead of cutting away most of the stomach and sewing a pouch like they do now. Sometimes the staples dissolve over the years and leave the opening between the pouch and the unused stomach. Sometimes the staples just come apart, just like paper. People would gain the weight back. Also, I think the pouch was larger and so the weight loss was not as drastic as it is now. This is why they do not use the stapling method very often, if at all, anymore. In a revision, I think they go in and actually cut the stomach and "build the pouch" like they do to us. I hope I know what I am talking about. But you guys know me, take what I say with a grain of salt!!!!!! Carol

Hi Betty There is no such thing as a stupid question It seems there is always something new to learn & talk about with this procedure. From what my surgeon told me, a revision is done under a couple of cir****tances. The most common reason being revising from another procedure like the VBG or lap band. The second reason being for some type of mechanical failure, which he stressed is rare. Apparently, with mechanical failure it can be several things but usually something within the body that just doesn't "work right" anymore. He stressed that this was highly unlikely and not to worry over it. I had a spell for a while where I stressed myself out over the thought of something happening and I would just stop losing weight. I think I have finally come to grips with that and I just focus on using the wonderful tool that Dr. Champion installed I hope that info helps - Just passing along what I have been told Good luck with your journey & God bless Angel

Thank-you to all *****plied. I guess a revision isn't as common as it sometimes seems. I understand more now. Thanks for the information and the re-assurance I wasn't the only person in the dark.
