Has anyone that has IBS had the gastric bypass surgery? Did it get better or worse?

I guess I should state what IBS is... It is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). I was told I had it about a year ago, and I had my dieticitian tell me that this surgery would not be good for me because of IBS... Has anyone had the surgery that has it?

I've had IBS forever! It used to be called "spastic colon." For me, it has gotten better, but, I think, it may depend on your symptoms. I'm trying not to be too graphic here. Hmmmm. I have never been able to eat when we travel, etc. When I tell the car driver to find a restroom, I mean...immediately. For the first few weeks after surgery, I thought I was in big trouble. Now, it seems that I am doing better. I am even able to eat some foods that where big "no no"s before like scallops. If your symptoms include constipation, I think it might be more difficult because of the discomfort that would be associated with "indigestion" issues. I really hope this makes sense.

Brandy... It has gotten SOOO much better, like Becky I couldnt eat and travel and when I said STOP it meant NOW.... I couldnt go to dinnner and go shopping, I always had to know where a bathroom was... I had trouble the first week after sugery, then had to do flax seed to MAKE me go... what a difference... I dont have any problems with it now... I asked the same question as a pre op... good luck.... Kiwani

I am sorry to say mine got worse. However, I didn't have the same problems as the others. I've always been constipated, painfully so. I took Metamucil before surgery. Of course, I can't take that now. I drink Milk Of Mag when it gets really bad. I guess it all depends on which way you are now.
