Please help!!
I went to my surgeon 2 days ago,and everything went good,I just have a question about the greenfield filter, since I had a blood clot before in my leg they want to put in the greenfield filter,I know its porpse what I dont know is how they put it in and how long does it stay in,and is it like a surgery do I have to be put to sleep for it because she did tell me they will probly put it in the day before surgery,Thanks in advance for any help......huggssss AMY C.
I can only tell you from expirence through what my mom had done. She was asleep when they did the filter....but she was also having other things done at the same time. My mom's filter had never come out. She had it for years because she had clot problems. I don't know how it works for surgery....but I'd ask the surgeron these questions so that you feel comfortable with it!
Best of luck to you!

A greenfield filter is placed in the vena cava (the large vein that brings the blood back to the heart and lungs). It is placed through a large IV stick in the vein in the groin and advanced into position under fluroscopy (xray). It's purpose is to catch blood clots from the legs before they get to the lungs and trap them from going any futher upstream. Think of it as an open umbrella that is in the vein. In the old days they were called umbrella filters. You will be given IV sedation but do not need to be put to sleep since the only thing that will hurt will be when they make the big IV stick and the area will be numbed with lidocaine before. It stays forever because you can not pull it out once it is full of clots or you may "shower" clots to the lungs.
Hope this explanation helps.
