Hurricanes, Horses and WLS

Hey gang! Contrary to popular belief I have not gone AWOL! I have been super busy and not had time to get on the computer. I just have to share with you all the neatest experience. As you all know Hurricane Frances was an univited visitor to the SE US especially FL. Our little town has a harness horse training facility that features 15 barns with about 450 stalls. Almost all of those stalls were full last weekend with evacuees from FL and S. Georgia. I went to the track hoping to help some fellow horse people deal with this bad situation. I truly met some wonderful folks - saw some awesome and expensive horses and received more blessings than I could have ever given. One morning I was sitting in the track diner talking with some of the horse folks and the lady (Bev) said to me with a HUGE smile on her face, "Robin, I was bigger than you 2 years ago". I said "You are kidding...what did you do?". She replied "I have lost 245 pounds through gastric bypass surgery." I just smiled and told her my surgery was scheduled for October 13. We continued to talk and she told me her 'war stories' of how she did post op and all. We must have talked over an hour about WLS. Later in the day, her daughter came in (I didn't realize she was Bev's daughter until later) and she said, "You'll have a new nick name...Skinny! That's what we call my mom now." And even later in the day, Bev's husband walked up to me and said he wanted to shake my hand for my 'courageous decision' to have WLS. These folks were absolutely filling my spirit with encouragement!!! Needless to say, after spending 4 days with all these folks from FL, we all got to be very good friends. Actually we had over 400 horses and about 200 people evacuate to our little town of Hawkinsville. I received such blessings and honestly, what could have been a horrible situation turned out to be a good one. As I write this, there are about 80 horses at the track -- this time running from Hurricane Ivan. Perhaps Bev and her family and horses will be back. I'm ready to answer the call if they need me! Sorry for making this so long but please know I'm not AWOL...just working my rather large (__!__) off. hehehehe Robin

Robin, what a neat experience! Looks like you all may have some visitors this next week, too. We've had lots of people in Albany and surrounding towns, and they have all been SO nice. Some have not even gone home, but are waiting out Ivan. I know you are busy, with your surgery date coming up. Don't work too hard, girl. Glad to know you're okay. By the way, back in the '70s I kept the books for Stoner Creek Stud out of Lexington, KY. It was jointly owned by one of the Woolworth's and a Mr. Johnston of Charlotte, NC. They bred, raised and raced trotters and pacers. Barb

Robin, That is a wonderful story!! WOW! I've heard it said(from the main board) that the friends you meet during a Hurricane are friends for life. I think it's true! I am just so happy for you. I can't wait to see you shrink & shrink. I know you will do great! Hugs, Tonya
