Damn near killed myself!
I was ask to lose at least 20 lbs by the surgeon's office to reduce my BMI. They said the if my BMI was lower than 52 than my risk of complications will be less. Not wanting any more risk than those associated with the surgery I put 100% in doing the Adkins diet.
WELL, in 1 week I lost 20lbs, became dehydrated and had to go to the emergency room. I was told by the ER physician to stop the Adkins immediately and that all I lost was fluid.
I look forward to going to the surgeon's office on Friday and giving them the news. I'm uncertain how 20 lbs can increase my risk of complications. Hopefully, I'll know more Friday.
Thanks for listening (reading)

IT WILL HELP SHRINK YOUR LIVER AND THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT THING ALOT OF DOCTORS IN THE ATLANTA AREA WILL NOT DO WHEN YOUR BMI IS OVER 45 ITS A HIGHER RISK AND LOSING SOME WEIGHT WILL MAKE THE RECOVERY FROM SURGERY EASIER FOR YOU THEIR IS ALOT THAT WOULD BENIIFT WITH SOME OF THE WEIGHT LOSS I KNOW MY DOCTOR DIDNT ASK ME TO BUT I KNOW HOW MUCH BETTER I WILL FEEL IF I DO AND START GETTING USED TO HOW LIFE WILL BE AFTER. I HAVE BEEN THEIR DONE THAT AND WAITING FOR MY REVISON ON THE 10TH OF AUGUST MY GOAL IS 25 POUNDS ,GOOD LUCK AND TRY ANOTHER TYPE OF DIET THE DIEBAYIC DIET IS A GOOD ONE !!!!!!!!
Hi Sonya,
Have you tried the South Beach? It works really well, if you stay regimented to it for 30 days, you can lose a good 20-30 lbs. I lost 26 in a month. I am back on it as I want to lose 20 prior to surgery myself.
It removes all carbs the first two weeks.
Also increase your water! That helps alot! Take care of yourself you don't want to hurt yourself!

This is the very reason I have a problem with docs wanting folks to lose weight in just a few weeks before surgery. I can understand *why* it helps to lose (I did on my own before surgery) but to force it in a short amount of time is dangerous IMHO.
Please take care of yourself and the best of luck to you.

thanks for posting this. My friend is doing Atkins and it scares me..especially after seeing my dietician and she explained everything to me. Your body needs proteins, fats and carbs to survive. Low carb diets are the best for your brain. Your brain needs, yes the dreaded word, SUGAR, to work. However, you can maintain proper sugar levels for your brain without killing it and yourself by putting on weight!
Glad you are ok. I am telling my friend right now....calling her on my cell. Now whether she listens is another story!
Good luck

I was on Atkins as my "last ditch effort" to lose weight before having WLS. I did not have to lose any additional weight prior to surgery, but I have to say this: if you were dehydrated, you were NOT drinking the required amount of water the Atkins diet says to. Also, many people go on the Atkins diet and stay on the induction portion of the diet because they think that that is where they will lose the most weight the fastest, but the diet is designed to take you through three phases... induction, ongoing weight loss and maintenance! OWL as they call it, does allow fore more carbs and sugars from fruit.
I lost 23 pounds in one year on Atkins and while it wasn't the weight loss I needed to accomplish, I did feel really good on it. I did not abuse the diet and I followed it faithfully. If anything, I was too obese to do the proper exercise to help the diet along. Even WLS won't work if you don't follow the program.
Sorry you going through this Sonya. My mother also tried the Adkins diet and was advise by her PCP to never try this again due to damaging her kidney. Her kidney was not functioning correctly due to high b/p and when she tried Atkins the high protein diet damaged her kidney worse. So anyone out there on Akins be very careful.
