New here...insurance question

I am new here and am researching WLS. I am a teacher and have State Merit health insurance. I was wondering is anyone here has State Merit and if you know if it covers WLS. Also, if you used a Dr. here in Georgia, who was it and where? Thanks so much!!

There is a place on the OH homepage website that indicates which insurance have approved the WLS. I did reach for a friend of mine and there were a lot who were approved but the best way to find out if your particular policy will cover it is to contact them yourself. I chose Dr Titus Duncan (Peachtree Bariatrics) to be my surgeon. I hope this helps, welcome this is a great website to do research and read other peoples experiences. Hugs and Prayers, Theresa

I'm not sure 100% if state merit does cover the surgery. I know most in the state system have better luck with BCBS HMO. That what got me approved. What I would do is call them on Monday and ask them. They have to tell you if it's an exclusion or not. Amy

I work for the State of Georgia also. I use to have State Merit Ins but I was told by one of their customer service reps that the did not cover WLS under any cir****tance. However, I read on OH where one person was able to get approval (not sure of the name). I change to United Health Care but they stated they did not cover WLS on the State Health Benefits Plan. I now have BlueCross BlueChoice Consumer Choice. I'll begin coverage on July 1. While browsing in OH I've found others who work for the State of Georgia to be successful in getting approval for WLS. OH as been extremely helpful with providing information and suggestions for those of use considering/wanting WLS. Continue to browse through the website...you'll get some answers. Good Luck!
