I have bcbs of ca. and I did not need cardiac clearance, but I chose to get the testing anyway since I am 49 and had hypertension (notice I said had - my bp is now about 127/72 the lowest its' been in 30 yrs)

I am 49 and didn't have to have the stress test, but did have to have the echo. I'm sure he was just being more thorough since I had a cardiac cath a couple of years ago. I've had a stress test before, the treadmill type. It's not bad, really. Patti

This is perhaps one of the most important tests pre-op you will have. It might be a pain, (it's not really) or inconvenient, but believe me, when you're under the knife for as long as we are for surgery you need to know that your heart is strong enough to take it. I had mine done in Lawrenceville and the people were really nice.

I had been getting all of the tests for surgery and was required to get a cardiac clearance - my echo was good but my nuclear stress test was borderline. The cardiologist almost let it go but after relooking, he decided to take a closer look through a heart catheterization - lo and behold I had a 80-90% blockage in my right anterior coronary artery. I never had any symptoms except for being out of breath often which I attributed to my weight. I am 57 and I do have diabetes and hbp but I had a stress test the year before and it was fine. Right now I am thanking God that it was required because last week they went in and cleaned out the blockage and put in a stent. Now I am wondering if it will affect my ability to get the surgery even though the cardiologist said it shouldn't be a problem. Take about scary. Meg
