I was not required to have a pych eval but was wondering if one would be beneficial. Can anyone tell me just what is done at this evaluation? If it would be beneficial to me I may go on and get one anyway even if it is not required. If it is just a standardized test it would be a waste of time for me.

From what I've heard about the required evaluations--it is just jumping through the hoops. If you think you need one, go to someone you have heard good about.

I would say that if you aren't required to have one, it isn't something you need. When I went I had to take a series of tests, talk about my undertsanding of the surgery and support system, and explain why I believed I was obese so they could determine if I might have issues that might affect my progress post-op and affect my success. Also, if it is not required, they would probably consider it a mental health visit, as opposed to a medical one, and you may not want that on your health records. Christy
