i started nov. 2001 on my journey to researching on having gastric bypass surgery done as i have been fighting my morbid obesity since my teenage yrs. well i was put on a waiting list to see my surgeon Dr. Burrowes in april 2003. and since then i have been doing everything possible to get my surgery done. well my insurance denied my request but said i need to do a 6 month supervized weightloss program. ok no problem. i waitied this long whats 6 more months. well now i have 5 months left to go. im getting closer so i thought. My husband got his new benefits package in the mail and guess what the insurance will no longer cover the surgery. i called the benefits department and explained my situation and that since april i have dished out almost a $1000.00 in medical bills i had to pay for out of pocket and i get this close and now cigna will no longer cover the surgery under the new benefits for 2004 she told me theres nothing i can do nor fight it thats just the way insurance works. she said they only thing cigna will cover now is obesity drugs and only if its a medical necessity. i have no clue what to do now. should i just let my huband get rid of the insurance we have through cigna and find our own and start all this over again only then again get this close and they say they wont cover it. or see if i can get the obesity drugs. i'm sorry but this really burns my butt. everyone i talk to says i should get a lawyer and fight the insurance company. anyways any advice or kind words would greatly be appreciative right about now. huggies, Stacy

I was just approved from Cigna HMO it took less than week for approval. I have yet to hear about them not covering it in 2004. It may depend on your group policy.

ok, I followed up on this with Cigna and one of the supervisors. I was told that alot of employer groups are going to start excluding this as a covered benefit... So you need to check with your particular employer 's HR to find out for sure....
