Macik actually does recommend the calcium carbonate (Tums, Caltrate, etc) in the beginning.  They like you to switch to calcium citrate at a later time.  Something to do with the carbonate being easier on the new baby stomach.

And there is nothing wrong with taking children's chewables.  Centrum Kids is better than Flintsones and stay away from the gummie vitamins.  If I remember correctly, Centrum kids chewables have the same exact stats as the Centrum adult chewables...and the kids are cheaper (at WalMart).

It's the other way around.  Tums is calcium carbonate.  We need calcium citrate.  I take Citrical.  :)

Across the United States, in 2006, twice as many people died from lack of health insurance as died from homicide.

My surgeon didn't have us start our vitamin regimen until we were released to solid foods (at 3 weeks).  At that point I was to start multi-vitamins with iron and calcium.  I tried the citrical petites at first, but they were too big and hurt in my pouch, so I switched to calcium chews I ordered online until about 6 weeks out.  Then I was able to tolerate the citrical petites.  Now I'm able to take regular size citrical with no problems.

One note on the calcium, though: check the dosage.  On most, a dose is 2 pills, not one.  I made this mistake for a couple of weeks.  It's a common newbie mistake.

Here's my vitamin regimen now:

1800 mg calcium
2 multi-vitamins
1000 mcg B12 sublingual
3 colace (VERY IMPORTANT, not from advice of the doctor, but from personal experience. trust me!)

I'll have labwork done next month and see if I need to adjust anything.  I need to add D, though.

If you're having problems with calcium, try these:

They are delicious!  Too expensive for everyday use for me right now unfortunately.

Don't feel overwhelmed!

edit to add:  if you take a children's multi vitamin, check to see what the adult dosage is (for non-WLS adults) and remember you should take x2 of that.  So if the adult dosage is 2, you would need to take 4.

Here is what I use now:
2 Bariatric Advantage chewable multi-vitamins(one morning one night)
1 Bariatric Advantage chewable iron
1 D3 (mine was low prior to surgery)
1 B12 sublingual per day morning
6 Bariatric Advantage Lemon & Chocolate chewy bites - 2 - 2 hours after morning vitamins, then 2 every 2 hours - I don't take my night time vitamin until atleast 2 hours after last calcium chew
I also take a fish egg oil capsule, 1/2 dose of miralax and 2 colace everyday.

I don't think I started back on the calcium until 30 days after my surgery.

Good luck.
